Hi all

I'm currently trying to organise a group buy for some GTA performance cams - made to spec by Alfa legend Jim K., author of the V6 High Performance Manual.

Alfa Romeo V6 Engine High-Performance Manual - Jim Kartalamakis - Google Books

This thread is to gauge interest - there are other cams already out there on the market but the advantage here is that we can get a set of custom locking tools made to the spec of the cams by Jim's machine shop to fit the new cam profile - meaning these cams can be installed and timed with the same degree of accuracy as standard cams

Initial figures would be something the region of £400 for a set of 4 which includes the manufacture of the cams, hardening, shipping from Greece and a share of the costs of the locking tools. I've based the costs on getting 10 sets (4 per car) of cams, and one set of locking tools. This would be on an exchange basis, although if you did want to keep your original cams then it would be a bit more.

So, I'll start:

1) Pud237 - 1 set

Dan is this a personal group buy or is it Autolusso/Parts etc Ltd?

In addition can the locking tools be loaned out to buyers? Can more than one set be made up.

What sort of performance increase can we expect?

As long as the locking tools etc were at AL for easy belt changes etc I'd be in. But I thought Jim said on the other thread that no two cars would be timed the same so the tools wouldn't be accurate or something? Maybe I read it wrong

cam timing is vehicle specific and can only be done 100% on a rolling road... but each cam can be given a timing value that will work with all engines.
Just as manufactures do with standard cams.. may not be 100% ideal for all cars but will be close enough..

of course depending on engine other mods etc you might gain a small amount having cams set up on a rolling road but in most cases it will be a small gain.. and unless you've got adjustable pulleys its a major pain for very little gain

I would be interested but I don't see how it will work if someone wants to use the locking tool locally? For regular al customers is ok I guess

Allow me to correct you here, cam timing is not vehicle specifc 1000 cars that are identical in terms of engine type and modifications they all need the same set up to achieve whatever targets you want to achieve.

Cam specs are not extreme, so you'll be fine driving to the track as well as around it. With these cams in a 3.0 24v, Jim is making 272bhp which is nice & healthy sounding to me. The design was based on a Renaultsport cam.

I can get locking tools duplicated once they arrive in the UK, this is no problem. If anyone wants their own set, I've got a very good local machine shop who can do this sort of thing. They'll be available at AL for use free of charge and once I've had a drawing made for the tools I'd be happy to lend them out on receipt of a deposit.

But no two vehicles are identical hence why all engines can be blue printed but they are close enough to use the same timing figures over a narrow range..
if you rolling road a 1000 identical cars they all produced slightly different results.
once modded the cam timing between different identical cars can very some this is what i think Jim was trying to explain

One question as I've bought re grinds before. How many miles are these likely to last. I wore my performance cams out on the TS after 50k when it took two lobes off the exhaust cam. I'm guessing they'll be tough rided/hardened in some way?

I want to ask a question, in the price of £400 are including new cams or we have to send our old cams
Yes its exchange, but you don't need to send your old cams first. If more people want to keep their original cams then we can do that instead, but it will put the price up. My idea was to keep the costs as low as possible.

They are hardened (nitrided) after the re-grind, so they should be as durable as the originals. Some GTAs are pretty hard on their cams, I've seen them worn with under 50k miles before. I personally don't think the Selenia 10W60 does them any favours. JTS's are spec'd for this oil too and they also wear their cams out. Did you use 10W60 in your TS by any chance or 10W40?

This is a bloody nightmare! Here I am trying to get my GT shipshape and you lot just keep adding more things to the list. I wish I could say yes, but suspension comes first.
