Summer 2013: I know this might seem premature (especially as we haven't even had a Summer in 2012 yet!) but thinking of next year......

Every summer a number of seaside resorts hold ‘free’ car shows - the idea being to entertain tourists and thereby encourage both tourists and participants to spend money in the local economy. Poole, in Dorset, runs a weekly themed car show named Quay For My Car. (Q4MC)
Throughout the summer, every Friday, the Quay in Poole Harbour is closed to traffic. It is an attractive location – opposite Sunseeker Yachts (where they are currently constructing Eddie Jordan’s superyacht!) with a busy waterfront and an excellent selection of bars and restaurants. As it's a tourist destination, there are obviously plenty of hotels in the Poole/Bournemouth area.
Poole Tourist Information (pooletourism.com) organises and run the event. As it is funded through sponsorship so there is NO charge for participants or spectators!

This year the themes have been:
4th May - Open Tops/Convertibles
11th May - Beetles & Combis (T1 & T2 only)
18th May - Porsches
25th May - 4x4s/Classic Landrovers
1st June - Open Tops/Convertibles
8th June - Mini Magic
15th June - Best of British (pre August 1983)
22nd June - Lotus 7/Caterham
29th June - Audi TTs
6th July - Open Tops/Convertibles
13th July - Beetles/Combis (T1 & T2 only)
20th July - Porsches
27th July - TVRs
3rd August - Open Tops/Convertibles
10th August - Mini Magic
17th August - Best of British (pre August 1983)
24th August - American Dreams
31st August - Sassy Smarts

As a fellow Italian Car enthusiast I think you would agree that there is a very obvious gap in their schedule!
I approached Anne Simpson, who is the Special Events Manager for Poole Tourism, to ask whether it might be possible to add a date next year for Italian Cars. She is very enthusiastic about the success of Q4MC and advised me that if there was a free date and sufficient interest it might be possible to inaugurate the very first ‘Italian Stallions’ themed Quay For My Car!

How can you help initiate the event?
I understand that in the past the Ford Capri Club held an event but out of the minimum 50 cars needed to make a date viable managed to attract only 3!

If sufficient numbers of Italian car enthusiasts register our interest and enthusiasm by e-mailing / writing then Poole Tourism will be willing to consider adding the event to next year’s calendar. Therefore please could you e-mail Poole Tourism at the address below. The more enthusiasts who register an interest the better! At this stage the event is only a possibility and obviously there is no commitment to attend just as there is no implied commitment for Poole Tourism to offer it.

Please could you register an interest by e-mailing [email protected]
stating that you would be a possible participant in an 'Italian Stallions' themed Quay For My Car in 2013

For ease you may Copy / Paste the following:
Title line - 'Italian Stallions' themed Quay For My Car in 2013
Message:
I / we would be most interested in participating in an 'Italian Stallions' themed Quay For My Car in 2013. I could bring my ………

Yours truly,

Footnote:
The TVR boys at Pistonheads successfully initiated a TVR night. Can us Italian car fans do likewise? http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Remember this can only happen if WE initiate it. So if you are interested please register your potential interest.

Well done alfasoldier

We all like to attend events in Summer but someone has to organise them!
And as Poole Tourism are prepared to put the time, effort & money into potentially putting on a show for us, the LEAST we can do is register our interest in attending IMHO.

I have contacted the AROC Wessex section (Nigel) who has registered their interest. Also Paul @ IAMC posted my e-mail in their newsletter so hopefully a few members will register interest. I also e-mailed the various Italian car owners clubs asking them to register.
The TVR boys @ Pistonheads managed to initiate a TVR night -if they can do it why can't us Italian car fans? (I posted a couple of threads on PH - response has been underwhelming!)

Well done Poolegan. And thanks to anyone else who registered an interest.
I received a e-mail from Anne a few weeks ago:

Quote:
Hello David
We spoke about an Italian car night at Quay for My car next year and I think you started some sort of a forum in respect of expression of interest?
I now receive e-mails daily and reply to every one, but I can only say the same thing, that a review will be carried out at the end of the year.
Would it be possible for you to change the insertion and ask owners to express their interest to you, then you can give me feed back, and I will let you know the outcome of any review?
We are not in a position to carry one out yet, as we will need to talk with sponsors to see if they intend to carry on for another year, but I will not forget the responses received to date, if they are a sample of the interest generated then I would be hopeful that a fair number would give their support.
Planning the programme It is not quite as straight forward as finding a free night, there also has to be a balance across the event as it is intended to be a mix of different marques and not just sports cars every week - Sometimes I am able to take a long term view to including a new marquee in the annual programme, rather than just as a one off, but that itself requires various changes, so takes a little time to establish

END QUOTE

Obviously I don't want to smother poor Anne Simpson with e-mails :D ..... so if anyone else would like to register an interest please could you do so through this site!
But it does look like sufficient interest has been generated such that Poole Tourism will at least consider a Q4MC if the event is held and if there is a suitable gap in their schedule. Fingers crossed.

Is it worth contacting Meridian and Westover Fiat to see if they would be interested in sponsoring/supporting the event? Their back up could help the effort.

Excellent idea! Do you have any personal contact details? If not, I'll give their marketing departments an e-mail. I'm sure Poole Tourism would appreciate some sponsorship - and Meridian & Westover might benefit from the marketing potential.

I will certainly come along too. Possibly also give a shout to Autolusso. I am sure Lawrence would probably like to join in on this as it is in his area.

Hooray!!!!!
Just had the following e-mail from Poole Tourism

"Just to let you know that I have set aside Friday 30 August 2013 for the Italian Stallion night. I hope that suits, and look forward to seeing you all there. Please do not arrive before 6.00pm as the Quay is a no parking zone until then, so we have nowhere to put vehicles, and I know it causes frustration having to be moved on.

For those of you that may not know, the event runs from 6 .00 – 9.00pm and we park on a first come first serve basis - I think we can accommodate about 100 vehicles."

So make a note in your (new) diary........ Friday 30th August!

No contacts at Meridian now as the guy I bought my car from left some time ago and I use my local indie for servicing. None at Westover either.

Thanks for getting back. I'll try and contact them in the new year - could be a good bit of targeted advertising /promotion for them & I'm sure Poole Tourism would appreciate a bit of sponsorship towards the running costs.

Now the date has been set I'm not sure that I can make it as we may be away then in the bigger of my Italian stallions. I'll do my best to ensure that my booking clerk has us back in time. Busy schedule in Aug - there is the Irish Festival of Speed on the first weekend - not sure that we are going there either!
