More of a sanity check than anything else, some opinions would be appreciated. So, the car is running fine generally (engine, electrics, etc) but I need to replace the shocks and springs as I suspect they are the originals (79K miles) and the handling is ponderous/wallowing, not dangerously but enough to spoil my enjoyment of the car. I'll be taking her to the Nordschleife during the summer (Yep I'll video my laps for ya :cool:) and I'll need a far better suspension set-up than I have currently! Currently debating coilovers v's eiback/koni replacements.

However, my original question kinda revolves around a concern I have about the power the car is making. When I get the occasional chance to 'bury the throttle' in second and third on a stretch of deserted motorway :tut: , it just doesn't feel like a 6.5-7.0 sec car to 60mph. Could the worn suspension be blunting the sensation of speed in some way, or could I just be down on power, engine was rebuilt at 63K (4.5k job - Previous owner thank god). Alfa specialist I think. Are some engine rebuilds better than others? Is it common for a rebuilt engine to be less powerful than before? Is rebuilding an art form where two different mechanics get two hugely different performances using the same tools and knowledge?

Gonna get to a rolling road soon and put my mind to rest one way or another! I'd rather know if it was making 190Bhp instead of the 220+ everyone seems to have! Then I could get it addressed. Now, maybe it is making normal power levels, I have been spoiled in recent years by having the use of my brothers Elise R (with serious mods!) for trackdays (Le Mans, Spa, Ring). I dunno, maybe my perception of speed has changed a bit (anyone else get that?), but it just doesn't feel that quick! Could the suspension be making all this possible?

Ideas?

occasionally drive an evo8, afterwards it feels like the GTV is running on one cylinder:)

I have to say my V6 feels nearly as quick as my Boxster S in a straight line, although it pitches front to rear a lot more under acceleration - I also have concerns about my shocks which I think are nearing the end of their useful life (99 car with 55k miles).

Maybe you have another problem which is leading to poor performance, but your analysis at this point is subjective. You need to compare your other car with another V6 or as you say, get it on a rolling road.

The Dampers/Shocks were nearly buggered ex the factory...they must be totally buggered
after 55.000 miles. Just do not replace them with factory ones ;)

I would guess that a 'bouncy' suspension would exaggerate the speed and make it feel even faster.

Worn suspension should in general exaggerate the sensation of the surge of power in a straight line. With soft saggy suspension when you bury the throttle the front rises and the rear squats down. In a simulator that's precisely how they simulate acceleration by tilting the simulator backwards with hydraulics.

Thanks guys, I think the only real answer is to get to a rolling road and remove the subjectivity of my perceptions. The suspension will get addressed anyway. I'll let you know what the results are.
