So is it okay to use fog lights in the situation described?

Is it wrong to use your front fog lights...

... if one of your main lights are out and you switch down to just your sidelights on well lit streets  (Just until you get home or to a garage to get an appropriate replacement)

AND for the first time today I had a go at changing it      ... who designed that thing :tut:

... and yes, I have read related threads on bulb changing etc and still found it tricky  ... and when I finally managed to get it in... realised that I had only gone and used another blown one

You're, kidding right?

The other day it had rained quite heavily and the roads just seemed to keep a centimetre of water or so... it looked like all the cars had their fogs on and was really painful on the eyes

Legally, no its not okay. However, it's common sense that its best to be seen.

Its interesting though, many European countries require you to carry spare bulbs by law; however, the new high-voltage bi-xenon lighting systems very clearly say in the manual that the bulb should be changed by the dealer. So how did they get European type approval then?

Maybe the law only requires that you carry the bulbs, not that you can actually fit them!

BTW have you seen Mercedes where the respective fog lamp comes on when they turn a corner? WTF all that about?!?

:)

AT LAST! I thought it was me going mad! I keep seeing these Mercs with one fog on, and if they're shuffling between parked cars, one fog comes on, then the next side, and I thought I was imaging this until I started seeing more and more of them doing this. I put it down to Merc's current rubbish build quality, but clearly it isn't.

So what the **** is it all about then??

They are called "Fog lights" for a reason.

they're more intense than normal bulbs (even xenons) and therefore should ONLY be used when visibility is extremely poor.
like the twats that automatically shove their rear fogs on when it rains on the motorway(or any other raod) and you can't see ****e

I have mine on all the time, when my lights go on so does my front driving lamps!!! On my GTV it does jack anyway!!! Only looks good!!!!

Been stopped twicve for having my front driving lamps on and got warned bout a ÂŁ30 fine but im not going to take any notice because it helps me see a clearer view of what is directly on the road infront.

IMO i dont see why anybody should have a problem with them!!!

Never heard of them being come nd race me lights!?

Oh well, if you can see better (which I happen to disagree with on other grounds) screw all those other people coming the other way that you're blinding eh?

And the reason I doubt the 'seeing better' claim is that the throw of the foglights is massively shorter than headlights. So they create a brighter patch a few feet in front of the car (which is pointless unless you're doing about 20mph - as you would (hopefully) be doing in heavy fog) but if anything, make everything further away harder to see, because your eyes are therefore not adapting to the overall light conditions.
Of course, you've already said that yourself. Apparently "On my GTV it does jack anyway" but at the same time "it helps me see a clearer view of what is directly on the road infront".

Yes, i've done it when a main headlight bulb is out. I will drive with the sidelights and front fogs on, with the working main beam turned off just to avoid a run in with the rozzers. I've been pulled for having a light out before and its a time consuming pain in the derriere. Fortunately because of the placement of 147 fogs, you can use them to fake main beams!

In the situation you described the answer must be a resounding 'No'.

If the street is well lit, putting the fog lights on is not going to help you see any better, but will be unconfortable for other road users.

You've better off just making do with the one headlight and getting the bulb replaced asap :)

...........only if there is no other option. Fog lights are just that - Fog lights for foggy conditions.

further to what I wrote earlier....hte front fog lamp switch on the 155 is in a friggin stooopid place. seem to knock 'em on when putting h'brake down or doin the rear leccy windows.

The fact is it's illegal to have either front or rear fog lights on when the visibility is better than 100metres, so anyone who does (and there are many that do) risk getting stopped and fined. On the other hand you could get stopped for having only one headlight. So it's your choice.

Carry spares but if you're stuck then I guess it's OK to get you to a safe place to be able to change the blown bulb !! :)

Hmm, fogs have a shorter throw than normal lights. Logicially this must be because they are angled further downwards than normal lights. Legally they cannot be more powerful than regular lights. So if drivers can cope with standard lights, I cannot comprehend why they cannot cope with foglights (unless beam was set badly or high power bulbs fitted).

My eyes are oversensitive to light and I have never had an issue with foglamps, so I personally think anyone that does should get their eyes checked out, and probably shouldn't be allowed to drive, as seeing another car at night with headlights on (that are often brighter and aimed higher than fogs) may cause them to close their eyes and crash due to the massive amount of light.

I can appreciate the whole not wanting to look like a chav thing, so for example I wouldn't buy Burberry. But I find this foglight arguement as silly as saying Oooooh, Burberry, just looking at that chequered pattern really offends me.

Just because you don't like people, doesn't mean you have to make crappy excuses to ridicule them. That IMHO is dropping to a chav's mental level. Why not ridicule them for other stupid factors like loving crappy Novas one mot away from the scrapper instead

Fog lights are lower and point downwards, meaning that they create glare off the road surface far more than headlights, especially with a wet road surface. They are also not dipped away from oncoming cars like headlights.

No, it isn't ok. Fog lights are for fog and you can get ticketed for using them when it isn't foggy.
I'm bloody sick of the brainless gits around here that insist on using them all the time - on unlit roads you seriously reduce how much an oncoming driver can see too.

Fined for having a headlight out? Around here you will be stopped and warned if necessary, if you're stopped again for the same offence without a reasonable time to repair then you may be fined - but you deserve it if you are.

Driving lights are a different thing. They aren't fog lights - you can usually tell them apart as fogs tend to have a clear lens but driving lights will have the striped / diffused glass.

I'd say No, never. On well-lit streets as described, a single headlight should be plenty. Only time you should have foglights on is if it's actually foggy. Not just dark, and not just wet.

As for putting them on because they look good......well, each to their own.

I think it'd be okay in the situation described, i'd certainly be happier to have someone driving around with those on instead of driving round pretending to be a motorbike and me crashing into them.

See thing is where I live there are vast areas with no street lights (middle of the Pennines) so at night I often switch my fogs on when there is no other traffic because it enables me to see the edge of the road a lot more clearly (147 fogs tend to throw light out to the edge rather than in front) this makes it safer for me to drive at the speed limit over the moor tops.

My thoughts exactly, although they are addictive.

If you use them too much, without them on visibility doesn't seem as good.

I leave the fog lights on with the side lights just before it starts getting really dark...looks good and it doesnt seem to **** too many people off.

I used to turn them off when the police are about, but they really don't care and now i leave them on. 3 years without being pulled or a fine....they really don't care.

I can see how they annoy some people and im looking into toning them down a bit either buy wireing them up in series or with some sort of load resistor.

@ badgers_nadgers - i feel the same way about xeons too i feel there more of a hazard than front driving lamps  You calling me a tossers, just shows your vocabulary cannot extend further than using foul words!!!

@ bazza - if it does give me a false sense of security then it makes me feel good at least, if no1 else!!!

dont start this crap about the country being a better place remember ure older than me, so some might say its your generations fault not mine!!! and ok some people in the society are selfish twats but i am not 1!!! :tut: Same applies to you as below (1st line of wat i wrote to wrinx!!!)

My arguements might be pathetic but not as much as the similarites you have put them against!!! drive into a tree :cheese: :cheese: :cheese:

@ wrinx - no i am not selfish or insenceative and how dare you acuse me of that as you know nothing about me    :tut: Well if they dont want them used inaproriatley then they shouldnt allow youre front fogs to come on when you turn youre lights on unless you turn them off manually if you have knocked them on by accident, as can happen!!!

BTW just so you all know i dont use mine no longer cause i have disconected them on my GTV soon after buying it out of preference and did it on my bmw!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK. A lot of that doesn't make sense, but let me put it this way: You've made two claims here:
1) You're not selfish
2) If it makes things better for you, you couldn't care less about anyone else

These are mutually exclusive, you need to decide which you believe.

My arguements might be pathetic but not as much as the similarites you have put them against!!! drive into a tree :cheese: :cheese: :cheese:
Yeah... that was kind of the point. If your reason for using the foglights is that they're attached to the car, so you'll use them to ensure you're getting value for money, then why shouldn't you do the same with every other bit of equipment? If my argument about the tree is ridiculous, and your argument about the lights uses exactly the same logic then.... can you work out what that means?

@ wrinx - no i am not selfish or insenceative and how dare you acuse me of that as you know nothing about me    :tut:
All he knows what you've told him on here, which is that you put your own wants about other peoples. Maybe you should think about why that leads several people on here to think you're selfish?

Well if they dont want them used inaproriatley then they shouldnt allow youre front fogs to come on when you turn youre lights on unless you turn them off manually if you have knocked them on by accident, as can happen!!!
Oh I see, it's the manufacturers fault! God forbid people take responsibility for their own actions.
