Hi

The MOT is due on my 146 next month but I know that it is going fail

The wipers need replacing (think it is the old model that needs the entire arm fitting)
The rearview window won't demist
There is a strong smell of petrol outside of the car
The lock on the drivers side is dodgy
My other half hit some rubble on the motorway and ever since it has been pulling badly to the left...

We paid £725 for it 15 months ago and have already paid £300 to get it through its last MOT, £250 on an entire new exhaust less than 12 months ago and £70 on a brand new windscreen.

Is it really worth paying more money to get it fixed or do you think I should let it go? Does anybody reckon i'd get anything for scrapping it? It is a lovely motor and does drive like a dream when it is working....

Change the wipers for some arms off the later model, then fit new rubbers.

Fix the tracking so it doesn't pull to the left.

Job done.

The other items are not MOT failure things so you can leave them for later. :)

Only you can answer that question based on the following:

1. Your financial position
2. How much you like the car

I would personally get it fixed, replacing the car could be a false economy, better the devil you know...

Get something newer and you lose the £620 you have already invested. My V6 probably cost what it was worth to get it through the MOT but I know what it's had done etc.

The cost of replacing the cambelt on my old Fiat 20v probably cost more than the car was worth at the time. I didn't want to sell it because it's always a case of better the devil you know. If you get the little jobs done you could get another couple of years out of it, if you wanted to.

it partially sounded like my car

The wipers need replacing - checked
The rearview window won't demist - checked
The lock on the drivers side is dodgy - not really but it's playing tricks in this cold weather

anyway, try to get it fixed. At least you know what the car is like:thumbs:

nothing on that list should be a cause for scrapping any car, let alone an Alfa.

I bet many cars are sold with a longer list than that, its a days work and about £50 at a breakers to fix those issues.

Or sell it to me for £300 as a MOT failure and I will sell it back to you, fixed, for £1200.

the important bits work fine by the sounds of it and there is plenty of help on here to fix a few niggles.

Suppose you spent as much as £500 getting it ready you'd then have a car for a year quite probably, or even longer. Could you get a car for £500 that didn't need work? Possibly, but not a given.

It helps if you can do work on your car. I wouldve given up my Alfa, if I didnt start trying to do work on it.

- wipers, I suppose you can replace.
- rearview demisting, we all get it, that is normal.
- strong smell of petrol...unless its a thief syphoning petrol out, doesnt seem easy to find the prob.
- driver door not working...spent about 6hrs on Christmas eve, but got to the bottom of that, let me know if anyone needs some info; driver door works a treat making all other doors now seem bad.
- pulling to the left...that would scare me cos I wouldnt know what the prob is or how to fix it.
