I have been having problems with poor fuel econmoy of my 1.8 8V for a while now and have read through many of the postings describing similar problems. The most common fault seems to be the Lambda sensor.

Now I believe it is quite difficlut to test the sensor unless you have fancy equipment and so i disconected it, thinking if it runs the same and gives similar fuel economy then it must the Lambda.
Well so far it has made no difference to the running of the car, however the thing that worries me slightly is that the engine managment light has not come on!!! should i be worried?

Cheers

I would be more worried about the car not running correctly since you disconnected the sensor, possibly damaging the cat.

What sort of mpg are you getting?

I don't think the 8 valves have a warning light. If they do,mine doesn't work. Can't see a reference to one in the handbook.

Bet your getting about 25 - 26mpg.

Your car should run like a bag of spanners with no Lambda connected. If it hasn`t got worse after disconnection then it sound like the lambda (or connection to it). If it still runs Ok then are you sure you have actually disconnected it !!

I read a post on AO.com about this sort of thing. The guy disconnected his probe and it didn't make a difference to the running. His probe DID work, he disconeected it for a different reason. Anyway........

Your right Marlon, i'm getting around 26 mpg. Its a bit early to tell what mpg i'm getting with the sensor diconected but so far it looks to be about the same, performance and generall running hasn't changed though!!

You may be right about the injector light, I just assumed it would have one as all the other injection cars i have had have one.

Another thing, how do i perform the diagnostic check on this car?, i have searched the forum but only seem to find info on the 5sec accelerator method which the earlier cars like mine (1993) don't have.

Cheers

Stef,

Replace the lambda probe heater fuse & relay before you worry too much about changing the probe itself.

....just DON'T ask me why I say this.....

The car will run OKish with no probe signal but you will get V poor mpg and probably the odd hesitation/stumble at times when you accelerate gently as well.

Hi Guys,
I'm having "similar" probs with my v6. It starts and runs ok, and the fuel economy's OK but at high speed under load the car seems to surge then hold back and so on. When I performed the ECU test I got code 1-2-2-4 which is heated Lambda probe fault...could this be the heater fuse and relay, and not the probe itself or does this confirm that the Lambda's goosed?

Hi Mark

Just to confuse you even more, I had the same code, replaced my lambda and got the same code again!! It seems that a few problems will result in the lambda compensating and then registering as a fault. Perhaps the temp sensor, that seems to caus a few nasties and is at the dealer waiting for me as I type.

Hi Wrinx,
Think I'll hold off replacing the lambda for now, and replace the temp sensor instead.
Please let me know if fitting a new temp sensor solves your prob. :)

Thanks,
Mark

This morning I replaced the Lambda Probe on my car. Took me about 30 minutes. I was a bit dissapointed to see that the probe on the car was a replacement part, meaning it has now failed twice in 87000 miles (actually less 'cos I've always had rubbish fuel economy). Anyway, the part on the car was a Universal thing and the wires had been cut and joined under the car. Maybe this is why this probe has failed or maybe just a bad connection.
The last owner had this car maintained by an Alfa Specialist. I keep finding evidence of bad service on this car   . I think if I find anymore bad workmanship, I'll post the garage name on both forums.
I've just filled the car up with petrol so I'll see if I can get at least 30mpg.

I had a similiar problem with my 8v, disconnected the battery for half an hour, and drove it easy for the week, now getting 350mls out of a full tank, at normal driving speeds again , I mean it - got a speeding ticket last week to prove it.

Some replacement sensors require the cutting of existing cables to fit them, not necessarily bad workmanship???

Hi Wrinx, when the join is made with electrical pvc tape (which isn't waterproof) and the join is right under the car where it'll definately get wet, I'd say that's poor. On top of this, I have the reciept for when it was changed last time. The guy was charged £68 for the probe. That is what a proper one costs from Alfa !!!! So I think the garage have been at the capers.
Anyway, I have lots of reciepts for various work done on the car and a lot of the "replaced" parts seem a bit worn ie. front suspension bushes done in July 2001, cost the guy £350 all in, but the bushes look perished and my front suspension is knocking. This is adding to a list of things I've found "wrong" with the car although it has been regularly serviced by the same garage since it was a year old. The same garage has been spotted wheel spinning 155's and 156's up and down the street where it's based. (my wife works at the end of the road).

Ah well, it's done now.....
