I use an External Drive for Back up and ensure that I'm never " On Line " when I use this so as to avoid getting any potential Downloaded nasties on it.

However I do like to leave Skype on all the time and wondered if access to the External Drive by the Un Godly could be done by them using the Skype Program.

I do have AVG and ZoneAlarm so I think I'm reasonably protected, even so I do ensure that both FF and Skype are not running when using this Drive.

Am I being over cautious or could I safely leave Skype running and On Line when I'm using the External Drive ?

I use skype and not ever thought of it as a security risk, and unless I hear otherwise, I think it is safe :)

I think you are right, thanks.

Probably as safe/unsafe as anything else running on your
computer whilst connected to the internet.

Skype lets hackers track your BitTorrent downloads ? The Register

Skype for iPhone makes stealing address books a snap ? The Register

Interesting Nev. As I don't use/do either of these things it seems that I'm as safe as can be, assuming I have understood the articles.........

I don't think you need to worry. Just because you're not online when backing up doesn't mean that something is already on your PC. It is probably an unnecessary step too far.
