Well, mine came on when I had a water leak and I'd lost about 5 litres of water.

There could be a fault with your injectors though.

Any other symptoms?

3 main faults cause the light:

MAF meter (check the wire has no dirt on it - there are threads on here about cleaning)
Lambda sensor
Throttle cable (Drive by wire)

Plug it into a diagnostics tool at a friendly garage and they'll tell you the problem. The MAF is cheap (only use Bosch) and easy to replace if need be; the Lambda sensor is also easy to fit if you can get underneath (tam garage might do it for a small fee) and the throttle cable is easilty remedied - take it to an auto-electrician (if you're not overly confident) and they'll take out the 6 wire connector and solder the cables together.

If it's something else it might be fatal so get it on a dianosis machine double quick.

I think as long as it's not flashing you shouldn't have anything to really worried about, it could be one of the three things that Brucie described. Mine came on on Sunday night, and I'm going to give the MAF a good clean on Saturday, I'll let you know how I get on.

If it's flashing, however, that signals a big problem, and you should stop driving almost immediately.

Oddly enough mine came on when I was on my way home last nigh. It was on for about 15 seconds, and then went off - it hasn't come on this morning...I wonder what that means

Hey mate,

The engine light on these cars is very temperamental and will come on with the slightest problem.

Best thing to do is have it hooked up to diagnostic equipment and see what it is, there are many many things it could actually be.

As said before if it doesn't blink then its not fatal and all is good for the time being.

Mine comes on about once a month and goes out the next day i was told by my dealer that there is no problem and ignore it.... lol

Good luck!
