I had this fault myself for a while - personally found it to be one of the most irritating things i've had to deal with on the car.
It is fly by wire connection (I.E. not cable.) The pedal is connected to a potentiometer up under the steering wheel, cables then go to the throttle actuator on the inlet manifold. First job is to track the cables and check all the connections.
Mine only happened when there was a passenger in the car - found the cable running through the passenger footwell. Passengers that were incapable of sitting still knocked one of the connectors causing the fault. Check that first though as the potentiometer itself is around £400 from memory so avoid if possible.
I'd take a photo to show you but my car is at the garage with a blown engine...
Could be your MAF.
Disconnect it. Any worse? No then your MAF is knackered.
Yes, then probably not your maf.
