I have a dash cam, it has a cable running from the camera to the fuse box where it is hard wired into the electrical system. It only turns on when the engine is started and switches off soon after the engine is turned off. I think most cameras are this way, batteries would be bulky and a PITA to replace between junctions on the M1 if they run out.
Thing is, I loath things dangling from/hanging on/sticking out from the interior (you know like those air fresheners that clip on to the air vents etc); I just don't like that stuff, and to see the cables clipped here and there, along the header rail and A-pillar then running into a socket... I would like to avoid all of this, if possible. But I guess it isn't.
I had three incidents recently that would have been worthy of a visit from Plod; and as driving standards are unlikely to get better anytime soon, I think a camera (with or without cables) maybe inevitable...
