I have a 156 2.4jtd it needs so much work done to it and dont know what to do!
i posted a post on here the other day saying the car had a noisey tensioner!
I have traced this down to being the crank shaft pulley i think!!!!, heres a list of work the car needs doing,

Needs new clutch and flywheel i have already bought this but not fitted
noisey suspension and ARB
major oil leak
cv boots split
sometimes car doesnt start in mornings just clicking sound

And know the crank shaft pulley i dont really want to spend another £100 plus
to find out its not the problem or i have damaged the crank and sensors etc

so its fix or scrap what to do!!!

If you decide to break it and it is a face lift model, then I'll have some interior parts off you, mainly heater motor, switch panel, interior temp sensor.
Oh, and the panel display on top of the dash.

If you have a squeak on area of crank pulley see if you can get an ok one off a breaker as I'd be willing to bet it's one of the aux belt idler wheels just towards front of crank pulley

I changed that tensioner last year the spring one I removed the belt so i think its coming from crank pulley or its internal,

I can sympathise - same problem with mine - ARB bushes starting to knock, o/s/f top arm squeaking in dry (again) A horrible rumbling noise when air-con kicks in at idle though quietens after a 10 seconds or so (simular noise but quieter if you hold it on full lock), been told its the air-con compressor and spring loaded tensioner but tensioner won't have done 15k since last change and the belts new - someone has suggested it could be the dmf flywheel starting to go - don't thinks its compressor as surely it would be noisy all time it was running and it quietens if revs raised.
Tempted to change for Brera but heard bad reports on JTD or 159 Sportwagon - but all in my price range have done more miles than current car:(

The noise was happening to me when I was putting air con even if I put the back window heater on! Any load what so ever I took the belt off and traced it to the crank pulley, I'm gutted I think I'm going to have to scrap it, the car looks lovely no dents and polishes up lovely!

I suppose we have to think how much is it going to cost to replace them, whatever you buy and put thousands towards is still going to need stuff doing unless you buy from a dealer - could be a case of better the devil we know - mine still looks and sounds great!
Is you clutch slipping or dmf gone?
Mine had had a new starter fitted when I first bought it but still just clicked sometimes - eventualy I found it was just a bad crimped connection at the battery end of starter lead:)

Buying from a dealer won't garantee a car not needing work it's a car !

The clutch is slipping in 5th and get judder when pulling off, I got a conversion kit smf from autolusso, I think I will try and sell this on! I bought a little fiat seicento to get me to work while I do the work then this other pulley went, its one thing after another with the car,

Hello Kevmjtd,

The esteemed gibot123 is quite right; the grass is not always greener....aren't you really saying you are....tired of your Alfa? If the noise starts when you add electrical load, I would have thought the noise is probably coming from the alternator... Or electrical connections are poor.

But if you are certain it's the bottom pulley, I'm pretty sure I have a good 2nd hand one; yours, for the cost of a drink! ( of course, you'll have to come and get it!)

Have you investigated the starter relay? If the fail to fire is accompanied by a click, it could well be that...just a thought.

I'm fed up of seeing these awesome cars going for peanuts on eBay etc; does anyone know how many 156 JTDs are left? Not trying to pressure you into keeping her! But I still can't find any other car that can do what the 156 jtd can do, ie, not too big/ heavy (159), superb performance, good mileage ( often even with a 'heavy foot'), good capacity( sportwagon), fantastic car for long distance...and that styling. It's an unbeatable combination. As long as the chassis is not eaten by corrosion, I can't see why they can't do massive mileage; I look at the suspension issues as 'consumables' with a finite life; don't see why a few squeaks is cause for scrapping...and you've already shelled out for the SMF conversion...alright I AM trying to change your mind....!

Let me know if you want the pulley:D

Hope that helps

Aye the questions is really...

So you like the car - forget its resale value. If you like it and it fits the bill then why not fix the issues.

If I took the line of its uneconomical to repair I would be alfa less and on public transport as my engine shat a big end bearing.
Now mine needs a big suspension over haul for its next MOT and pad's and discs. This alone would probably write the car off if I paid for labour. But the car's good and works perfectly.

Sell it for a project if you want to move onto a new car and are bored.

Hi captain, I want to keep the car I suppose I'm crying for help! I'm 99% sure its the pulley as there nothing else turning as the belts off and noise is there, I'm all up for fixing her but can't keep throwing money at her to find out there's damage in the crank, I'm on a budget with wife and two baby's and can't waste £130 on a part, I love the car best car I've had and I'm absolutely gutted!!! Where in Somerset are you for the pulley your a life saver if you could do this for me are they different mine is the 150 bhp model?

Hello Kevmjtd,

You have a message! Just checked my spares collection (!) and can help; just to confirm, pulley is for a 156 jtd, 10 valve, 150 ( black/silver) engine cover version.

Hi,

I'm possibly being thick here (very possibly) but how would the crank pulley squeak? or is it not a squeak?

I'm just wondering whether cambelt tensioner or water pump are more likely culprits?

Photodave may have a point here; the noise could be the rubber part of the pulley failing...or it might ( I only say might!) be the smaller toothed pulley actually on the crankshaft ( Left hand thread, done up VERY tight) has snapped it's locating tooth and is beginning to move...Have you checked to see if any fault codes come up? When I had this happen, it did set off the engine management light, however, fault P1320 ( a number engraved on my very soul....!). But if Dave's right and your water pump is the noise, you might want to remove the cambelt cover and check the belt is ok. Some food for thought. But Pulley is yours if you need it

Just read all the above posts since my last one, mechanic who listened to mine recons the dmf is going and that sends vibrations down crank to pulley/belt end of engine at low revs - he says thats why auxillary belt tensioner jumps about and theres noise from air-con compressor when they are running, mines had two tensioners in 40k for this fault and its now as bad again!!! they can't all be failing after susch a short time surely?

Like Scottyf says - if the rest of the car is ok then forget the resale value and repair it -seems to go against the grain to me but IT IS propably cheaper than replacing it with something that will have issues to fix and the subsiquent loss in value

Right i'm off to look at my noisy belts and pulleys:(

Hi all I have had the cambelt tensioner water pump replaced 2012 less than 8000 miles ago surely it can't be them? The work was done by a specialist using all oe parts! It's not a squeak its a knocking noise! Yes captain its the 10v with that engine cover I will run a scan now to see if it comes up with anything, I can pick the part up tomorrow if ok with you.
