Factoid: Military spec Unimogs have pressurised transmission and headlights for zero-water-ingress during wading operations.

 

Had one on the farm many years ago , knocks a range rover into a cocked hat , especially getting through really deep mud -- ground clearance is huge. Expensive to run though so need to be working for a living.

 

If i won the Lottery, the slightly mad gene that still lurks inside me, would probably drive me to buy one.

Didn't the railway maintenence companies run them with a conversion with flanged wheels that jacked down and allowed them to drive along the tracks?

We went in the back of one into what might be called jungle in Mexico, on holiday, 10 years ago. The articulation was amazing as we negotiated some very rough tracks. Only sat in the back but it was very memorable. I was also fretting about an embryonic JimJr at the time but MrsJim was taking it in her stride.

I think i've just worked out what my niece's birthday present will be I hope she's still into Lego come September :lol:

 

I do remember reading 4x4 mgs in the mid 80s and the Unimog was
always the ultimate 4x4.

They are used a lot in the South of France for forest-fire fighting duties.
You can wander across them camped out in the forest sometimes.

 

I keep passing one on my way to and from work...its HUGE! Thought it was helping with the floods at first...now not so sure
