Owned one when they were rare ie one of the 1st UK owners and it felt very special......now too common for me....performance isn't a stunning as it should be. Far happier in my more 'exclusive' GT with half decent economy and a useable boot / rear seats !

Car Tax & Economy on the RX will be crippling now unless you do very low mileage.

Around 7000 a year and at least half of that for work where I get my fuel paid for so you can say that fuel economy doesn't really come into it for me thankfully. I'm pretty certain now that after my test drive in a GTA that the V6 Alfa engine is th one for me. Plus my wife tells me the RX-8 does look a little gay

Just on a personal note, if I was looking for a Jap performance car around the £8.5 - £9K mark, I would go for a Scooby, Evo or Skyline. All of these will give performance in spadeloads, whilst being fairly reliable. For this price, you will probably get an import, but there are plenty of specialists around used to dealing with them.
I would personally go for a 156 GTA, and do some work on it to make it special.
