As the title states, how can I tell if I need new discs? Is it related to the lip at the edge of the disc?

Measure the thickness.

Don't go by the lip because thet is often removed during servicing.
So you could have a disc close to wornout with no lip.

std front discs are 22mm new and 20mm fully worn.
rears are 10mm new, 9mm fully worn.

+1. I use the two sets rule. Seems to give a good guide.
Unless your tracking it.

When i was young disks used to last for the life of the car, now they last about two sets of pads if you are lucky!
No No, on the Brera you change the discs and the pads together.

On the 2.0 147 you change the disc before the pads. ;)

Everything changed when asbestos free pads came along.

Well there is a significant lip on the discs so I guess that's a good indication I should get them checked. If I do need new ones, should I go for better discs than oem and is this a job that I could do myself?
