How much should I put my 156 up for?

Hi all,

The time has come to sell my beloved Alfa 156 2.0 T.Spark Veloce saloon. The car has only done 37,560 miles and is supported by full service history, including 13 service stamps, most MOT certificates and numerous receipts. It is tough to decide how much i should put it up for as most other 156's of this age on the market are either in a bad state or have 100K plus on the clock. I understand mine is going to appeal to a very limited market but to someone out there its has to be worth a lot more than the average.

Please have a look at the spec/photos below and let me know how much you think its worth?

It has recently had two new front tyres and received a main service with no advisories. Next MOT due 17/04/16. Only two owners from new and in brilliant condition inside and out. I have owned the car for almost 5 years and it has proven to be very reliable and a pleasure to drive. The car is of standard Veloce specification including; Electric sunroof, Electric windows, Air conditioning, CD player, Sports seats, 16" Alloy Wheels, Spare wheel (Space-saver), Power steering, Steering wheel rake adjustment, 2 keys, Remote central locking, Alarm, Immobiliser, Driver's airbags, Side airbags, Passenger airbags.

Cheers,
James

I totally share your dilemma. I have my 156 up for sale and had the same quandary. My car is not dis-similar to yours in the respect its a low mileage 156, which is in top condition.

My attitude to the sale of mine, is that I can sell it to someone who just wants 'a car' in good condition for a grand. Or I can price it at what i think its worth, and wait until you find someone who wants a mint low mileage 156 specifically.

Heres mine:

http://www.alfaowner.com/Forum/alfa-147-156-andamp-gt/920754-2006-156-jts-selespeed-for-sale.html

FWIW - I've priced mine at 1600 looking to get 1500 for it. Yours IMO is worth about the same. Slightly less miles, manual with Ti interior (a bonus IMO), but older. Just my opinion and the proof will be in the sale.

Would appreciate what you think of my advert/price also?

Trade in price from ÂŁ101.00 to ÂŁ180.00
Private sale price from ÂŁ580.00 to ÂŁ650.00
Dealer retail price from ÂŁ1,135.00 to ÂŁ1,275.00

Now given the ultra low mileage which will help sell it. Maybe you could squeeze another ÂŁ500 out of it. So maybe ÂŁ1600

Can always start it at the higher price and work down should there be no interest.
Quite hard though as you can pick up a 156 for the cost of a night out it seems.

It's also a none face lift with the older interior and textile seats.

Try it. People can only say no.

When's its last cambelt change?

My parents have a 156 2.0 in absolute pristine condition - always kept in heated garage, not a scratch, regular services and stamps... and around 60K KM on the clock.

My dad thought of selling it and he got offered 800 euros for it from a garage - without even looking into the car or the engine bay.

My dad said "f*** it, I'm keeping it" and now intends to drive it until the scrapyard, which hopefully (and probably, looking at its current condition) will take quite a few years.

Maybe just keep it if you don't need anything newer/faster/bigger? I still drive the 156 of my parents sometimes and really enjoy it.

You should put it up for at least 1.5k - my reasoning being that it's a good spec, 147's sell at similar prices and it's a cracking car for a not a lot of money so unless you're desperate you shouldn't let it go for any less. I know I wouldn't hesitate at buying it for that if I needed a car, or if my wife would want to drive a 156 - she has a 147 already and I have a GTA so no need for another car. I'm sure someone will snap it up at that price if you have a bit of patience. Good luck with it all.

Hmmm, Difficult one.

TS 156s are worth 2/5ths of sod all at the moment. Yours has exceptionally low mileage, but at the end of the day is still an X reg 156. Regardless of the mileage, if it has been outside all its life, I would assume that the floor pans have all of the problems of an X reg 156 until I had had the interior out and checked. Mileage is no guarantee of floor pan integrity, indeed if a car has been standing outside for several years, it might be a contra indicator.

Unless someone really wants a 2.0 with cloth seats, then I think you'll struggle to shift this for more than a grand. If you can find the one person who really wants to preserve a 2.0 for posterity, then you might get up to 2K for it. But you may be waiting a long time.

I agree, all depends on how long you're willing to wait. I recently faced the same dilemma for getting rid of one of my 306 cabriolets. They're quite a similar car in some ways - pretty and fun to drive, but not quite a classic yet. And they're shown as being worth the price of a pair of trainers in Glass' Guide too.

Someone sold one in a similar condition to mine for ÂŁ1300 after waiting for almost two months for a buyer to turn up, but I needed to get rid of mine quickly to make room for the GTA, and then got messed around by a 306 club member, leaving me under a week to sell it in. I got ÂŁ350ish in the end.

I am looking for a second car as a family run about, and thinking about a 156 as I really miss having an Alfa on the driveway. Not looking to spend more than a grand but if anyone has a fairly tidy well loved example they are looking to re-home let me know. Not to bothered about engine size or spec at the moment just looking for good motor.
Thanks
