I understand the loyalty to Alfa, they are a great brand and make great cars. But i have a limit, and it seems to be lower than many here!

As for not understanding the humour, thats a fair comment and I apologise for my tone. And it would help us newbies if this Alfa thing was explained, even if it has been explained many times before.

When the members state they prefer a 164 to a Skyline to a 164 and a 156 to an Evo7,its worth remembering that someone might be shocked!

I notice you aren't a lover of smilies Mr Mak.They help new members understand the humour from the "regulars".

So perhaps an explanantion is in order, now that we are all friends? i.e are you really saying that the driving pleasure you get from your Alfa is greater than a Skyline or is there some mystical ingredient to Alfa ownership that has passed me by?

ps

You can always rely on Mak to liven up a debate,in the same way as a gallon of petrol will liven up a naked flame!Where were you when "The Pain" and Robbie were around. Then there really would have been fireworks.Perhaps Mak,we can get you to post a suitable firework specially on the Evo magazine forum!

fireworks aren't a problem Pete, but "you don't understand and i can't be bothered to explain" is!

But apparently I've misjudged the humour for which i've apologised for,so its all ok,except i'm still waiting for an explanation of the mythylogical Alfa thing that makes you guys fall asleep in Skylines and Evo7s!!

Hi guys. I'm back!

FWIW here are my thoughts on this thread.

Alfas build some of the most stylish and driver orientated cars in the market segments they are aimed at and now that they seem to be built properly they are a realistic proposition for drivers less tarnished than me!

But to write off every car as boring because it doesn't have an Alfa badge on it (regardless of price) strikes me as being narrow minded and snobbish. Surely we are driving enthusiasts first and loyal to brands second. If you put these priorities around the other way you are going to deny yourselves a lot of fun IMO.

There is of course always going to be bias on here. Okay, sometimes its a bit OTT but it is an Alfa forum and by and large, I think most debate on here is balanced and credit given to others cars when due. If anyone thinks it is very biased here, a quick look at everyones profile will reveal that most peoples dream car is not an alfa!
If you go on to any car forum, there will be bias. Except Evo where its a friggin bun fight constantly! I barely get to type the letters a l f a and Im abused from every angle!!

I agree with all of this Aisha. You want to try being a BMW owner on EVO

Having had a good look around this BBS, I cannot beleive some of MAK's comments regarding modern Alfas and other brands. Is this guy blinkered or what?

Basically, as far as Mak is concerned, if you you don't drive an Alfa 33 then you know buggerall about cars, driving or passion. If you don't agree with him then he just insults you or your choice of car!

This smacks of arrogance on a huge scale IMO

Look Pain by you own admission you have seen the light and now drive a BMW so I'm curious as to why your still here? Maybe the usual BMW driver threads on nice new pens and designer watches from the new catalogue is even to boring for you?

You drive a BMW cabriolet and you wonder why guys on EVO don't give any credability? Come on pain some realism would be nice are you honestly going to try and convince Alfa owners here that your soft top handles and out performs say a 24v 156 on anything but a straight line, giving away some 500cc?

If your reason for changing to BMW was poor dealer service and reliability problems then fine I understand that and won't even try and support Alfa's record. But the majority here I would say are fully aware of these problems and do not hold them in the regard you so clearly do effecting your decision and purchasing a BMW. Thus your ranting on about it as some of your previous posts have shown, on the whole I imagine would fall on deaf ears.

Finally, I would genuinely appreciate if you can point me to all of these posts where I have expressed such dreadfull opinions of the modern range of Alfa's? If me mentioning that I don't like the rear of a 147 from a design perspective, constitutes one of your examples of my hate rid of 'new Alfas',I would sadly think that your credibility here would be even further diminished.

Regards

MAK

Pain, what did you think of the gtv winning over the TT and bmw coupe in times last weekend??!

Ive said it before, outside opinion especially from a ex-alfa and now bmw driver, is very worthwhile on this board IMO.

Did you know that Penny wore a bondage PVC catsuit on Driven last night?

Just trying to lighten things up.... I`ll
get my coat.

Credibility intact!
Yeh Ade name this quickly turning into legendary specialist As for the fact you own an 11 year old 33 what do they know don't worry about it you own one of the greatest post war Alfa's ever made and incapsulate's far more of the alfisti spirit than most of the new rubbish!
Best regards

MAK

Aisha,

I didn't see the Times article. If it was based on styling or a Sunday morning blast then the Alfa will always win. If it is a car you have to use everyday then it is less certain. The TT was too claustrophopic for me when I test drove one and had the same compromises as the GTV without the fun factor. I chose the BMW for the reasons I have mentioned before on this BBS and it is a more comfortable and practical car than the other two for everyday use. It is also a blast to drive when you want it to be..

PAin, the gtv came first, the TT came third and they said 'no way' to the bmw coupes. (it was Jeremy clarkson actually). The point he made was the bmw coupes are just two door 3 series which in fact they are. It was the very fact that the gtv put beauty ahead of impracticality that it won. JC reckons coupes are supposed to be impractical, thats the whole point of them and I have to agree. The car is for one purpose only. Thats in its purest form of course.
Another point he made about the bmw coupe was that it was a pose mobile and that even the m3 which he acknowleged to be blindingly quick, rarely got to more than 10% of its capabilites in the hands of most owners. Again I agree. I think BMW are in some ways too good! They attract the 'it' types who just want to be seen in it for pose reasons and it is a shame. Because IMO, bmws are not sad cars, but its many of the owners who are. Looks like we are back to the same arguments again Pain!
I know you drive the car for its capabilites but an awful lot dont. Agreed? All these people are jumping on the bmw bandwagon and ruining its image.
BMWs were very cool cars years back. But now they are seen as cool by the wrong people. That is a genuine shame. Alfas still have that q factor about them and I like that. Many are afraid to buy one, it makes them less common and a bit more elite I think.

'BMW's. Built by Germans. Driven by tossers' J Clarkson. 1998ish

Good points Aisha.

I don't beleive that a coupe has to be inpractical. If you look at a BMW saloon next to a coupe you will see what I mean. Four doors detract from the look of a car. (even Alfa disguise the rear doors on the 156) The BMW coupe is also wider and lower than the saloon and has firmer suspension. There are lots of small differences too. Frameless windows, sports seats and other bits and pieces which are not available or are extras on the saloon.

I agree with all your points regarding BMWs image problem. People honestly think that the BMW badge means something more than 'my car was made by BMW'. It is sad because BMW have brought this upon themselves by building excellent cars which people aspire to.

Alfa also have an aspirational badge and an image problem. If Alfa manage to turn there 'fun but likely to go bang' image into a 'fun without the compromises' image then I can see them succumbing to the same problem as BMW currently have (all the tossers will want to be seen in one). Alfa are currently trying to create this image for themselves and to be honest, Alfa would prefer BMWs image to their own as they would sell more cars which is what they are there for in the end.

HHHuuuuunnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!

Nice big steaming "turtlehead" placed on this thread towards sychophancy and pointless allegiance towards Alfa's of all eras.

Current cars - yes
Enormous racing heritage and very tasty models up to the eighties - (rwd)GTV6 - oh yes please.

But..... Alfa 33!!!!!!!!

Crikey, just what sort of drugs do you need to take to defend this pile of shite?

Alfa are currently trying to create this image for themselves and to be honest, Alfa would prefer BMWs image to their own as they would sell more cars which is what they are there for in the end.
Absolutely! Its a terrible irony that a brand like alfa which aspires to reach the dizzy heights of BMW may one day tarnish itself for being too popular. BMW build excellent cars an in return, they get labelled a wankers car. Its totally mad but totally true. Everyone has a bit of money these days so there seems to be more and more competition to out-do others. The BMW is perceived as elite and so in a quest to stand out (and its getting harder these days), people go for the bmw only to find everyone else has too, because THEY are also trying to stand out and go one up! No one wins!
Ive never had a problem with bmws but a lot of bmw drivers get my back up. Yea it is a bit stereotyping but it is a car that a go-getter will go for and these types stand out a mile!

Believe me, I am no purist when it comes to cars but I do think a coupe should be about looks and performance. Leave the other things to other cars. However, in the real world there is a very good argument for a practical coupe and the BMW does that.

Pain, Im sure it must annoy you about this twisted image problem BMW seems to be getting. I would hate to see Alfas end up like that but like you say, Alfa need to sell loads more cars to ensure survival. They may just become the new accessory for the self styled hip and successful one day.
So alfa go from one extreme to another...
