My current Alfa has recently lunched its engine and the kind people at CM garage have quoted me £1300 to fit a new engine. This is where i need advice.

Should i get a new engine fitted to the old girl. She is on a '52' plate with 64000 on the clock.
She is quite tatty and has other faults (exhaust, oil leak coming from above the gear box) or should i look to get something else for close to the same money?

I've had two 2.6V6's - they are brilliant - totally unbustable - but go in with eyes open.
You don't say what you have now.
1 - Busted car is worthless. So fit a new engine and gearbox unit as one complete with belts etc. plus a few bits other bits and you have got a 52 plate car that you know and like and costs about £1500. Work guaranteed but not in best condition.
2 - Buy the unknown for £995, its a risk but you could do well if its can do your homework carefully. Some risk but not a lot of money. Can belt mentioned. And there will be a reason why its being sold. Bet its ok. Realistic price but check history.
3 - Buy an unknown Y reg for £1250, another risk same as above but its had a lot of work done at someone else's expense. Make real sure all the expensive bits work properly because you know how much they cost and this is not going to be worth much if it fails. Cam belt not mentioned, and probably lead a harder life.

Buy the best car not the number plate. Mileage irrelevant, condition is everything. If one of the ads are really good cars then its worth a punt. If not sure then stay with the devil you know and be careful what engine you put in. Ask yourself which car you want to own if everything seems ok. The red car is reads well enough and may be the dark horse. The grey one will seem sportier and tempting aesthetically - but dig deep. Tax/MOT worth more.
Good value in work done though - and all about right for mileage which should make you think.
