Just stumbled across this forum in my research for a bit of rationalisation of our current vehicle fleet.

I'm thinking of replacing an '03 mini cooper and a '69 S2 E-type FHC, with something enjoyable, stylish, comfortable, economical and reliable for a 90 mile round trip to/from work roughly every other day. Only one child in the family (apart from me) so must be some room in the back. An 18 month old diesel GT perhaps?

Looking forward to some useful comments from alfa fans and owners (the 2 don't always seem to go together).

G'day, i'm sure you'll find the welcome as warm as I did. Good luck finding the right Alfa for you. (Can you stretch to a new 159? They're gorgeous!)

Welcome to AO. It is now 42 years since bought a real E Type, so have probably forgotten some bits. I now have a GT JTD, which does better than 50 MPG, is very firm handling. Leather seats, rear parking sensors seem to be the most important, plus wheel options. For comfort over ultimate handling the 16 inch wheels may be better, though most will disagree. Metallic Amalfi light grey I will refer to as golden sand, as its pretty close to the old Jaguar colour. The GT is usually offered at very optimistic prices, and does take time to sell, so you might get a good deal with end of year coming.

Hi and welcome to AO. Glad you like the welcome.

It's not clear whether you are getting rid of the Mini, the Saab or both.

The GT is lovely and you still don't see too many about - just don't pay too much! The 159 Sportwagon might be a good shout if both moderns are for the chop as you'd have a bit more space.

Let us all know what you choose, even if it isn't Alfa. No snobbery on here!:)

I'm afraid its the mini and the E that are going. Saab is Mrs B's as she now finds the mini a bit raw, and I have to agree with her: no aircon, harsh ride and very poor seats Vs handling. As for the E, it's competing with a Mazda Bongo camper for garage space and use as the occasional week end away, and its only got 2 seats so we can't all squeeze in, (some might find that a bonus).

I am smitten with the GT's looks and reports of the diesel's driveability (and economy), but my main reservation is the reliability, so any opinions good and bad would be welcome.

Welcome aboard. Alfa seems to have sorted the reliability issues dogging Italian cars so they are now no better/worse than anything out on the market at the mo. The looks, ride and handling are great and best way to see for yourself is to pop down to a dealership and have a go for yourself (for research purposes of course :D )
