Guys I have found a lovely Alfa GTV that I want to buy. Almost closed the deal today. However, the seller has called to say that after having taken the car to an Alfa Specialist today they confirmed that a diagnostics test could not identify why the airbag light is on.

Should I walk away?

Would it fail an MOT on airbag light?
Would the airbags go off without warning?

Not part of the MOT so no fail. Would not go off without warning. Might work in a crash, may not. Were the specialists able to reset the light? If so all should be good. What typically sets the light off is adjusting one of the seats with the ignition on - the electrical connectors get disturbed momentarily. Only really a problem if the specialist could not reset the light.

Thanks

Don't think specialist managed to switch the light off. What I was told was it would take many man hours to find the fault. Shame because otherwise its great just under 50000miles from new lusso spec 2.0ts 2004.

If he can't reset the light whats the likely problems?

Which Alfa specialist is this Bigman? The airbag light is normally a straightforward reset job, mine needs doing because I recently had the seats out of the Spider. All this talk of 'many man hours' is total and utter rubbish:rolleyes:

A fault in one of the components e.g. ecu, squib or a fault in the wiring. It is simple to reset the light if no fault exists so if the light cannot be reset there must be a fault somewhere in the circuit. It could get expensive.

Not sure what specialist it was. Doubled checked was not able to reset light and had checked seatbelt pretensioners was suggesting wiring fault.

Rewe thanks for the advice I have walked away from this one.

Still determined to get back into an alfa. Will keep on looking let you know when I find one.

Not much of a specialist if they can't diagnose/ reset the thing.

Any true Alfa specialist or main dealer would be able to obtain the diagnostic code from the car in minutes - and no doubt charge an hours labour for the privilege!

Not just any specialist/main dealer, but most decent general independent garages should be able to get a fault code. If they can't communicate with the ecu when they normally can then there is a problem that is going to take time to diagnose.

my 98 spider has had several quality shops here in the US try to find the problem to no avail i personally will take all of the information that has come up on various sites and have a go at it myself in the near future! it seems to be a common problem?
and thanks for the welcome-norman

Had the same problem when first got the car. The people here in Thailand reset it with the computer only to have it come on again. Finally soldering the connection of the wires below the seat solved the problem for me and its been two years now. I,ve been told this is malady with this model and once soldered will be okay.

:) good luck and you shouldnt turn away.

That's generally the way forward. You can reset the light and not move the seats with the ignition on, or you can get it soldered and not have to worry.

Congratulations on your new Alfa Bigman. You are the second person on here recently who was able to get a troublesome airbag light reset by a second garage. I guess the advice should now be to get a second opinion before assuming the worst.

Hi All

Just had my V6 GTV back from major surgery (Q2 Diff, Front suspension arms, new radiator, new brake lines, full service etc) £

On the way to the indi specialist my airbag light came on

He has all the proper Alfa/Fiat diagnostic equipment but they could not find the fault / reset the light because the machine said that it did not recognise the ECU! He said that he has encountered this problem with a GTV before and couldn't fix it. As far as I know it's all original, maybe there are a batch of ECU's that are not sycronised with the dealer diagnostic equipment
