Sad News! I Was Driving My Car And Then Suddenly.. my Gears Started Grinding, Car Smelt Like Burning, It's Hard To Put Into Gear, It Drives, However, It Sounds Like There Are Rocks In My Engine. When I Change Gear, My Car Makes A Very Loud Wierd Grinding Noise, And There Is ALOT Of Oil Driping On The Bottom. It's Very Sad And I'm Heart Broken. It's A 1.4 95BHP 6 Speed Manual Mito. It's Got 40.000 Miles, no warranty. Any help appreciated. Thanks!

Sounds like a clutch problem - it not disengaging properly if you're getting grinding trying to change gear. Are you sure it's oil, and not hydraulic fluid, that's leaking out? How does the clutch pedal feel? Everying sound ok if you're in neutral?

It seems to be oil, and the clutch biting point is low on the floor, not high up, it feels soft and springy, everything seems to be okay at idle no sounds.. It's so strange

... although if it's making the noise in gear (i.e. it started making the noise when you weren't changing gear but were just going along in gear, and also makes horrible noises while in gear or neutral) and it is definitely oil, could be the gearbox. Either way I wouldn't drive it anywhere - you want to get someone who knows what they're doing to take a look!

Thanks for the help.. I've jacked up the car to have a look and it looks like a lot of oil has been lost, it's consistently dripping! Also, why is my gearbox pink !!

I don't like the look of that shiny part in the centre of the photo - not sure what that area is meant to look like (not had my mito long, and it's a different model) but is that a hole with some shiny metal showing through?

I found a post from a few years back from someone who had a gearbox failure where a broken part punched a hole in the housing and from the photos linked from the thread it looks to be in the same spot (password is 1234):

That was linked from this thread:

It seems to be a hole of some sort with a metallic ball ? When I Rev the car it moves about, not entirely sure what it's supposed to be..

If you look at the photo I linked to you can see there's not supposed to be a hole there (in the photo I linked to, in that patch, there's damage caused from something inside the gearbox but it hasn't quite punched all the way through). I'm no expert, but I would guess something has unfortunately broken inside the gearbox (possibly that's the differential area of it) and hit the housing inside with enough force to make a hole and the oil is your gearbox oil. You certainly don't want to drive the car any further with it like that if that's the case. If the gearbox has broken in that way then the only repair option may be a replacement gearbox (hopefully a reconditioned one would be easy to source to minimise the financial pain).

Contact Autolusso, North or South and seek their advice for a replacement.

That gearbox/diff looks terminal:eek:

The thermostats on the side, its leaking. But that's the least of your worries sadly.

How would I check this, where is it and how can I replace it ? Also does anyone know a trusty gearbox repairer or a mechanic with my gearbox and will fit it for me ?!

Ah - I'm to the west of London I'm afraid. When I've been looking at gearbox specialists vaguely over this way (as I have a suspected issue on mine) I found a couple of recommendations for this place, but I dunno how much help that'd be given where you are:
https://www.hardyengineering.co.uk/gearbox-repairs/

I think I recall reading a couple of positive comments about this lot and they are a bit nearer to you:
Reconditioned Gearboxes - Repairs - Helical Gearboxes

No personal experience of either though.

If you've got a local trusted garage then maybe there's a recon gearbox supplier they use and trust (quite a few gearbox recon places supply nationwide, and there may be some local to you, I've just no idea which are any good!).

Thanks a lot for your help, unfortunately I don't have a trusty mechanic as my dads had all sports cars and had no problems at all. 240z's , XJS's and a lot more.. However, only his Alfa Romeo GTV gave him trouble!!! Most of the problems he had he fixed himself . Gearboxes were not one of them so I'm struggling to find an honest mechanic !! I don't really fancy being ripped off either. I've called many places, and it's looking around £1500 - £2000 to get the job sorted. Huge kick in the teeth ! :(
