Hi I have only had the car for 2 weeks and thought it was using a lot of fuel but not sure about the fuel gauge so filled it up and today topped it back up and was absolutely horrified that it had used 18 litres to do 65miles which according to my maths is 16mpg this was mostly in town which I have read should be around 36pmg. The car seems to be running nicely any ideas what could be wrong with it? :wow:Help

Whats the temp guage say? 16mpg is GTA territory so there has to be something very wrong with the car. Plug it into diagnostics and see what pops up. I do a lot of town/city driving but i get about 34/35mpg.. Also just thought that you may have a fuel leak somewhere. Even a faulty thermostat wont give you such low figures on a JTD

Then it is your stat that is knackered. Should read around 90. This is why you have poor MPG

No way is it just the stat causing that sort of consumption. Any smoke from the exhaust? Any fuel smell around the engine bay? Any stains on the tarmac where you've parked?

It is town driving so I'd expect it to be pretty low with the cold engine. If it's not smoking then it isn't overfueling. Could just need a service

Hi have just checked the thermostat and it is definitely stuck open so that is going to mess things up for sure, apparently the air flow meter could be faulty could anyone give me some advice on this? Thanks

Easy, do you have huge hesitation? for instance do you get to say 3000rpms and cant go anymore? if yes then the MAF is gone. Unplug it and go for a drive if it is much better then you need a new one.

My 2.4 JTD returned about 38mpg locally when the thermostat was knackered running at 50C, after changing it now runs at 85C and returns about 41mpg, bit more on a run. Better, but not a vast improvement.

Thanks not sure what it should be like but seems a bit hesitant to rev past 3k, don't know where the MAF is to unplug it. is it easy to do?

it must be more than the thermostat then, I have it booked in for diagnostic tomorrow so hopefully will know soon and hopefully won't be to expensive.

Very easy, right above the air filter theres are piece of plastic tubing with a connector coming out of it. thats the maf. Unplug and away you go.
