Me? I'm just a stressed out teacher who loves his silky silver 146(sorry, couldn't find a red one that didn't have faded paintwork!).

Used as second car to and from work and trips to the off license, I only do about 5000miles a year. Shorts trips mean I get anywhere between 23-33mpg! Oh yes, it's not that economical but sod it.

Had Alfasuds and Sud Sprints before this 'sensible' car came along. Children and a hefty mortgage mean the sporty Alfas are definately a thing of the past.

Like some of the messages I read as a guest, the cam belt thing seems to have cropped up. Done 60k and the clanking has started....oh dear. Still can't find anyone in the Bury/Bolton area who can do it for a fair price and who KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING!

Help anyone please...??????

Hi and welcome to AO:) what's your idea of a reasonable price?

i only ask because do you think it's dear in relation to what the cars worth.

my last 155 cost less than £500 and having this job done would have doubled the outlay so i did it myself.

Welcome to AO :)

A quick scan of the AROC directory of services shows your closest specialists as Ferdis in Lytham St Annes and West Coast in Southport....maybe too far from you?

Thanks for your advice. Worth £850-900 if running tip-top but cannot afford to change car so really like to sort it. Don't have garage facilities or extensive know-how to do it myself! I drive them and let someone else fix 'em! That's half the fun of these Italian beasts.

Hi and welcome. I'm in the area but unfortunately don't know of anyone good and cheap.:(

There's an ex Audi guy - Ian something or other - in one of the small industrial units, right side of the road 3 or 400m going up beside the Landrover dealer in Bury. I can't even remember the street name, sorry.

He did my old A4's cambelt years ago and came on recommendation. He did a good job for a fair price. I seem to recall it being almost half the dealer quote. No credit cards or cheques but vat registered and proper receipts given. He may take on an Alfa - a belt is a belt after all - and they have to take off all the front end of an A4 to do the job.

Good luck.

I'm afraid since westune went west - he retired there is nothing local - the other alternative to southport is peak alfa out glossop way...

I still travel to mangoletsi's for all my work as there is nothing better closer - and it's main dealer pricing.

There was supposed to be someone in Sandbach?

Ferdi is part of AROC's lancashire section and I've heard good things about him.. with Easter coming up a day out could be in order?

Simes.

I managed to find that Audi guy's number...if it still works. I think it's him anyway Ian Bolton 0783 1447450.

Also try giving Richard Murtha (RGWM on here very occasionally) a call. He runs Bury based Alfa breakers http://www.alfabettacars.co.uk/ and is Sec or Chair of the Lancs section AROC and is an all-round decent chap. He may be able to point you at someone.

Hi, I'm Bury Bolton area too - Caledonia wanted over 600 to change my cam belt, and Lythgoe 700+ but including a service.

However I've called both Ferdie's and Heath Garage who both sounded very informed and helpful and were approximately 480 each, so I think I'll be going with one of them - unless someone knows something more!
