Grinding noise from the starter motor after running out of steam? Sorry mate but sounds terminal. Sounds like it's seized up and that could be after running out of oil or a slipped timing belt.

Did your battery light come on? If it is your alternator, you battery light would have been on, dull and probally not full brightness and as the problem got worse the brighter the light would become.

OTOH maybe it could be the bearings in your alternator? I carnt elaborate much on this unfortunaly, I only suggest this because I recently had mine replaced on my GTA (£400 ) because the bearings had collapsed.

If it was a battery/charging issue you would expect it to turn over with the jump leads.

Its a bit difficult to exactly what the problem is without hearing it. Do you know if the tensioners were changed at the same time as the cambelt?

Well I dont know about your 156 but they took my alternator out the wheel arch. The part itself I got for £150 and the rest was all labour.

All cars have their problems fella and I hope you get sorted:D

Join the RAC mate, the whole family is in it (4 of us for about £200) and we have the full package. Best investment you can make, if you get a problem just ring up when you get to work and say blah blah blah and they come out fix it or tow it to a garage. Used them about 7 this year, none of which are on my GTA:D
