Hi guys I am a newish alfa owner and hence new to the club.......

The gear stick on my 147 has gone floppy, goes into all gears fine but its not sharp anymore, its floppy even when its in gear. I can select all gears fine....hope its not a gear box issue....

I was thinking of using viagra but dont think it will work!

Has any one more experienced got any ideas what it could be??? and is it a big job to repair??/

Thanks for any help....

I think it has something to do with the gear linkage behind the battery, That would be the first place i would look to see if it is all intact and working.

I had the same thing on mine, was a £40 fix at the garage - involved removing gear lever quadrant freeing off something or other and lubricating.
if its the gear links then would the gears actually go in properly...as i have no issues selecting gear but rather the gear stick is very floppy and loose.
Am assuming its some bush under the gear stick.....
The gears went in ok for me too but the stick didn't centre so I had to 'find' gears sometimes.
ahhh.... there's a joke in here somewhere... :p
Have the same issue on my 5 speed manual 147 2.0TS.

Saw another post talking about a nylon/plastic bush at the bottom of the gearstick that cracks and causes the gear selection to remain possible (self centring still OK), but has excessive 'play' - about 10-20mm side to side when in neutral.

loose gear stick with pics

However that was for a 6 speed (with lift up for reverse) - not the 5 speed.

I went to an establshed local Alfa specialist repairer (not dealer) and they said that the bush is not replaceable, but a whole new gear selector assembly including gearstick was required.

Cost? About A$240 for the part and another A$180 in labour to fit.

Seems a tad extreme to replace what appears to be a small, inexpensive part.

Maybe the dealers just can't be bothered fixing these, so they just supply the complete assembly instead?

Is there someone out there who can advise whether the bush alone can be replaced, or whether you need to buy the whole assembly?

BTW - the self centring issue is not what I have - I know what the fix is for that (replace the two 'top hat' plastic bushes in the selector that bolts to the top of the gearbox - an easy DIY job).

Thanks!

That is my thread :) - I think the parts came to around £14!
"Help me V6Jon - you're our only hope" - hey that might be from a movie

I'm sure there are some 'individuals' who do strange things to the exchange rates between Europe and Oz to turn GBP14 into A$240...

OK - after looking at ePER, here is what I think is going on:

The repairer is quoting me on 'control' (prod code 735308851) - which is the full assembly.

What I think I need is 'vessel' (prod code 55191141) and/or 'bush' (prod code 46768698).

Can you or any other kind soul confirm this?

If it makes a difference, the car is a series one (pre facelift), built Sept 2004.

Cheers!
