I have a 2001 156 2.4 JTD. It has a squeak/squeal that is fairly constant at tickover but that disappears at driving speeds.

This has now been joined by a whirring noise that goes up and down in line with engine revs. Looking at the auxiliary drive belt it is clear that a spline/2 or 3mm has shredded off.

I have had the covers of under the wheel arch and it appears that the squeal comes from the bearing in the spring loaded tensioner roller close to the alternator (could also be an alternator bearing). I have managed to loosen the 8mm allen bolt which appears to lock the tensioner in position/hold it on, but could not find an easy way to release the tension to fit a new belt and check out bearings on tension roller.

I have have now tightened everything up pending some advice.

Is a special tool needed to release the tensioner? Is there a special procedure?

Also, is it possible to replace the bearing in the roller itself, rather than buying a complte new assembly as suggested by Alfa dealer?

Can anybody out there help me on this one, please
