Last week i bought a 1999 2.0 156 selespeed, with a slight knock on the engine, which i thought was maybe the variator, or in the back of my mind big ends.

but after looking at the car and all the toys, new tyres, superb condition, wheels where great condition, interior spotless i thought to myself i want it. so i had it.

she's in the garage as we speak, for new big ends. he said that he could do all the work ,engine out strip down new shells and bearings, con rod, timing belt put all back together for £1000.00.

which i thought did'nt sound to bad, as he has a great reputation and usually deals with top marques of cars.

the garage rang me today , we have a problem. the crank is cracked.
iv managed to source another £310.00

your clutch is nearly worn out. another £120.00 ish

so what turned out to be a grand is mounting up to nearly two grand by the time he's finished.

i know ill have a sorted car at the end but its gonna owe me nearly three grand for a car thats only worth two.

but its got to the point where i cant abandon the project so im just going to keep it and look after it for a few years. i gave £1225 for the car. but even though i have had all these problems in one go i still love the car, its great i think im hooked.

I just really hope i get to drive it again soon, my first alfa , i never thought a 2.0l 16v engine could sound so good, my last car was an audi 2.8 v6 and did'nt sound anywhere near a good.

anyway just thought id share my problems with you all, you see your's are not so bad now. thanks :)

Good luck with it mate, Alfa's can p*ss you off no end but once they're running sweet they're worth it.

Ahh, Alfa's aye?

Had mine for 4 months now and still having issues going into 3rd (selespeed). Had a indie check it out but he requested 13 hours of labour at $110 AUD p/h just to pull the gearbox out and check it out - he still wasn't sure whether or not it was the gearbox.

But hey, what can you do. When it drives.. it almost makes your $%# hard :D

$110 p/h?

Where are you going to?

I have a guy in Artarmon, charges $80 p/h, i can give you his details if you want. He works on a variety of euro cars, but mainly Alfa. Little italian guy, very good :)

I spent $2000 on fixing mine up November last year, been running great since. It was the 100km service, need a few things done as well as the ball joint arm replaced.

Worth it tho, best car i've ever owned, so much fun drive :)

Sounds good! I live in kogarah and work in surry hills so artarmon is no problem getting too. Could you PM me his details or hit me up on msn ? Would love to contact him and see if he knows what could be wrong with my bloody selespeed :(

Also due to get brakes and cambelt done also.

Much appreciated !

Edit: I went to Brian Foley in Carlton.. Very well established alfa specialist and been around for 20+ years. Although I was a bit sus about them going straight towards the gearbox and needing 13 hours to see if anything was 'lodged' inside.
