Im going to do battle with the engine next weekend to sort out the head gaskets, im gonna book to get the heads skimmed once there off, just wondering what amount of material to remove? Whats safe to remove and what effect will it have?

There seem to be a few head gaskets blowing - mine went at 100,000 (rear bank) normally the minimum is removed to ensure (if warped) the surface is flat the enigneers will make that decision. I had my main bearings, piston rings and cambelt replaced at the same time plus a couple of valves were burnt out 9possible due to temprature issues leading to the gasket blowing so reseating and replacement may also be required.

That's money I don't need to spend, hence why I'm doing this myself, besides from reading on the net (Wikipedia) polishing doesn't work now a days because machining at manufacture has improved. Porting on the other hand is serious business I just can't afford to get done.

I know someone that does really fine cut head skimming for £70 + VAT for both heads V6 heads. i think he cleans the ports etc for reasonable money too.

When I enquiried it was ££££ for porting and polishing so won't bother for the gains it would yield.
Yeah mine weren't cheap either but then again, it will also depend on the cams etc.
