Hi all, I had to be recovered from my journey to work yesterday. I've got a 2009 1.4 jdtm. Driving on the motorway it developed a knocking noise, loud metal on metal. This got worse over about half a mile. Now the breakdown guy said it could be the camshaft and followers. The engine still starts and runs ok, other than the loud knocking. It's not missing. So if it was the camshaft or timing belt I assume it wouldn't run or it would be lumpy. Any thoughts?

Update, alfa specialist has said that he is 90% sure it's the big end. Question is can this be done from the underside or is it engine out/new?

If its the big ends that are gone, which can be checked with the engine in but it it all needs replaced then engine out and full strip down required.

Really dont know whats happened i've been quoted £2750 to £3500 for a "new" engine. I was offered £2750 as a trade if it was up and running and MOT'd. So i think me and the Mito will be parting company.

Not sure about the oil starvation. It was my initial thought. When i pulled up i did check it and it was full. i cannot tell if it was circulating. All i know is it was running normal right up until it went.
