Hi All

I’ve spent days looking through past threads reading advice about buying a GTV, specifically a V6 (my decision having been made after reading many of the threads on here!). However, at risk of boring you all with yet another same-y question, I’d like your advice on the 3 potential cars I’ve found. I’ve only actually seen the 1st one but have spoken at length to the owner and dealer in the 2nd and 3rd options and will see them on Sat:

-2000 X reg, Trade sale, 1 previous owner + Demo machine, 32,000 miles FASH and is immaculate in black. Dealer is asking £8495 which I reckon is way too high, but he’s had it a month so says he’s willing to drop the price and do all the work that needs doing – cambelt change, brake discs shimmed or replaced and windows re-alligned.

-2002 ’02 reg, 42,000 miles, Private sale. On 3rd owner, 2 of 3 services to date have been Alfa main dealer, one at a specialist. However, major service, MOT and cambelt are all due now. Bodywork (blue), alloys and interior are meant to be immaculate (haven’t actually seen this one yet). They are asking £8495 which again is way too much – an identical one just sold for £6450 on Autotrader. The owner doesn’t sound like an enthusiast as he didn’t know the cambelt was due on time elapsed.

-2003 ’03, 42,000 miles Trade sale. Full service history, last one at specialist, absolutely immaculate body and wheels, £8495. Dealer has had it a month so again says he’s willing to negotiate.

I’m sure I could get the private one cheapest but realistically he needs to come down to around £6500 as I’ll have to spend £500 on servicing.

The first, X-reg one has the lowest mileage and is truly spotless and the garage has a good reputation for selling sports cars. I reckon he might go for £7495?

The last option is the newest, will really need the cambelt doing because of the mileage, but I reckon the dealer would let it go for £8250.

Comments, opinions and advice gratefully received!!

Cheers

Martin

I wouldn't be too fussed about 10000 miles or a couple of years to be honest.

If all the cars are out of warranty, a specialist is as good as (if not better given Alfa dealers reputation) than a dealer service history in my eyes.

All of them from your description seem to be in very good nick and you know to price the cambelt change into the deal for car 2.

To be honest you are in a very good position with 3 cars to choose from and can use this fact in your negotiations.

I can't help you make your decision, but it is an Italian sports car... you should be focussing on the important stuff like the paint and interior colour!

In that case black with red leather or red with tan/black leather would be my choice :)

I'd go for the black one myself :)

I paid similiar for mine 6 months or so ago on a W plate with 31k on the clock and I felt that was over the odds but the guy wouldn't budge on price. Like you, I had the cambelt change factored in to the price.

I bought through a motortrader and I'm kinda glad I did cos' a few things went wrong with mine in the first few months of ownership and I managed to get the trader to cough up for them. A word of warning with warranties; sometimes they're not worth the paper they are written on as I nearly found out to my expense so check what is/isn't covered carefully. Thankfully, the guy I bought the car from was a bit of an alfa fan and picked up the cost of the bits that did go wrong during the warranty period even though they weren't included in the fine print.

Mine's red with tan so that would be my choice of colour scheme. Or Meteor grey with red throughout :inlove:. I'm not biased at all or anything! ;)

Hope that helps, Best of luck.

Cheers guys, I'm going to see all three this weekend.

I think the dark metallic blue with Tan leather looks fantastic so that's got to be right up there for me if I can come to an arrangement on price. However, the 2003 one is in silver with red leather which I also think looks pretty cool.

But there again Black with black leather is kinda classy! Decisions decisions!!

I think I know the X reg you took a look at - I'm in the market for a V6 as well - and I took a look at it recently as well. I passed on it and it seemed you did as well...for any particular reason?

It's the one in Sunninghill... I had a good look at it but there was no real history included, the dealer didn't know whether the cambelt had been done, and most fundamentally it is way overpriced. They wanted to discuss price before they let me test drive it too and when I said I would be looking at ofering nearer £7.5K they said no, it was worth more.

They have reduced the price to £7995 now but I personally think this is still too high. Also I decided black with black leather is not the best colour combo, its nice but a little boring maybe?!

I'm getting frustrated looking now... I've been looking for a couple of months and still not found one that is right. I'm contemplating giving up and going for something else entirely, but hopefully it won't come to that!

Pull yourself together man and no more of that conchy talk!

Keep looking, took me about 2 months to track mine down.

Yep, that's the one I was thinking of. To my mind, they'd have to give it a complete service, including belt change, replace the warped front brake discs, and sort out that odd knocking noise coming from the back of the vehicle, oh, and drop the price by about £1500, before I'd consider placing an offer!

I'm biding my time - in the end, I know it will be worth it.

I'm trying believe me, but it's frustrating not being able to find a decent one at a realistic price! I haven't given up yet though!!
