Hiya Folks

My 2.0TS is just having a repair after the cambelt went.... new head / Valves etc, now the garage have had it for some time now, and they have made me aware that they now need a "Timing tool" to finnish the job!!

He said to me that it would cost them £300 for this tool.....are they talking rubbish and if so how much are they? so I can be armed with correct info when I get there.

Cheers!

I suspect that the garage you are using are not Alfa specialists because they don't seem to know what they are on about and £300 for " Special " tool !!!?

I'm no expert but so far as I know the only special tool is a set of camlocks for about £25. Check the link out.

Also do a search on here and you'll find lots of info.

Seems to me that they are either incompetent or prepared to rip you off, reappraisal required I think.

Also bear in mind that when the belt snapped the bottom end will have taken a massive shock, it is advisable to check/replace Big End Shells and check Crankshaft.

Good luck.

hi will

whats worrying is that they need to buy the tool in the first place! have they not done an alfa belt b4? look at the thread on the main page titled "poorly fitted cam belt" by tristan gtv.

nige you beat me to it:lol:
:lol::lol::lol:

Sorry about that !

Your comment about needing the " special " tool is also very apt, I would be having serious doubts about this garage. Lets face it for any Alfa garage replacing TS cambelts is a pretty much bread and butter everyday job.

NO they arnt alfa specialists but I took it back there due to it being under warrenty when the cam belt went, not out of choise. The cam belt went when I was starting the car, one of the tesnioners gave. The garage I bought it from sells lambos, ferraris etc....so I was hoping for them to be a Prestigious garage!

hi will

when they have fitted the head and done the fluids put the car onto a trailer and take it to an alfa mechanic. cos if they fit the belt wrong and it wrecks the engine they will prob turn round and say your water pump sheared so as not to blame themselves.

Sad to say Will but it often doesn't work this way.

Years ago Alfa run a service only franchise scheme, the local garage who had this was a an upmarket Mercedes place. I took my 'sud there for a service. Got it back nicely valeted and the door hinges greased. Pity about the engine being badly mistuned and the brakes that were so tight that I couldn't acheive more than 30mph. They charged me a fortune too. Lesson learned - Merc mechanics know sod all about Alfas.

If your car is under warranty and the repair is costing you nothing let them go ahead whilst insisting they check the Big Ends. When, if, they finish the repair whip straight round to an Alfa Indy to check what they have done and if they have done it right. Might cost a few quid but peace of mind is priceless.

Again, good luck.
