Hi,

There have been several threads and posts about the boot rattle problem at the forum and here is another one...

But I'm now 99% sure about the reason for (most of) the boot rattle: it is the sun! When the GT is standing in the sun and the boot window (the rubber packing around it) is exposed for sunshine the rattle starts!

My alfa dealer fixed the rattle problem in august just by adjusting (?, I don´t think they knew what they did to fix it...) the boot in some way, but rattle has now started again:mad: . And it happens every time the GT has been exposed for sunshine some hours and NOT when I have parked the GT in my garage and not during the winter (I live in Norway)

So this is my question to you: I'm quite sure that I read in this forum a year ago that there is an offical Alfa-fix for the boot rattle, but now I can't find it.... Can anyone confirm that there is an offical Alfa-fix for this? And is there a number/identication/name of the fix which I can give to my dealer so that they can fix this once and for all? Thanks!:)

There is an official fix, yes, it's on here if you do a search.

That said, I must agree that my GT is generally more noisy when it's been sitting in the sun. Think about it - heat makes things expand, which means things must rub together when the interior is hot that otherwise wouldn't.

I now have an odd sound - not quite a rattle, but perhaps a slight creak - coming from the rear that wasn't there before the recent hot weather we've been having in the UK. I just turn the stereo up now, because I've got tired of spraying silicone all over the place :D

There are fixes that have been mentioned in our group and I am sure go well to fix problems. But a simple one that works for me, and also fits with the heat & sun thought. Just try pushing the hatch around the side plastic surrounds, mine creaks! I now every now & then wipe Autoglim rubber cleaner or a silicone cleaner around the edges, stops any noise & lasts a few months.

Definately worse in the heat - been baking in the UK for weeks now and it's been noticeably worse. Not the original rattle I had with the tailgate though more of a squeaking as plastics rub against each other.

But is the fix official? I heard it was just a suggestion from Alfa to a dealer that now everyone knows about, rather than an official process etc?

I took all my rear trim out to change the rear speakers the other weak, and now I have no squaek where I had one before - so its somewhere in the trim but I could not tell you where!

What he said. Mine's had the official fix and the rumbly rattle is back. I noticed last night however that they've replaced springy rubber stops again. I'd previously removed them as I was sure they were part of the problem. I'm going to take them off again, they don't do anything technical anyway.

Um, this is really obvious but I had some odd noises coming from the boot of my GT recently. At the weekend I removed the parcel shelf because I was transporting some large boxes and the sounds have gone without the parcel shelf there.

Since there seems negligably more road noise than before, I've left the parcel shelf out and now all is quiet.

Its been 3 days now that I had my car back from the garage. One issue was the rattle which seems to have been sorted for now. I dont know what they did but the mechanic did say that it was an issue with many owners. It was done on the warranty.

Thanks for replies and suggestions.

I'm not 99% certain anymore about the reason for the boot rattle, I'm 100% sure!! It is the sun/warm weather that causes the rattle, in my case at least.

This is what happens: In warm weather/when the boot is exposed for sun the rubber packing becomes too soft, see picture. It helps to give the packing a "massage", but only temporary. The best (?) solution (but not very elegant...) is to put a rag between the boot (see next picture) and the rubber packing in the area the rattle is. It works 100% and the rattle is gone!

can you explain my squeak in winter. ;)

i'll give that a try anyway. i may be able to lift the rubber up a few millimetres around the perimeter to push up more firmly.

:)

Ak Norway, I'm going to give this a try today for the drive home from work today. If it does work, then a more permanent fix could be to stick the fluffy side of self adhesive velcro strips onto the boot hatch where the rubber boot seal comes into contact.

LinQ, there is a small rectangular rubber block that is missing on AK's car where you indicated, I actually removed it from my GT to see if it was the cause of the squeak, but made no difference. I think the boot hatch does rest on it though.

Mines had everything done to it and seems to have wasted half my life at the Dealer for this issue but still no permanent fix. I think you either shove a cloth under the hatch or accept the rattle as part of ownership. Simply can't believe Alfa STILL haven't fixed this eternal problem on the GT. If the 'official' fix worked for you then thank your lucky stars cos for most it makes little if any difference.

Silicon spray cured the rattles in my boot! The silicon needs to moisturise the rubber. Sray on excessively leave to saturate into the rubber, then wipe excess away other wise in heat will become tacky and squeaking starts all over again!!:(

There are many different reasons for the rattles and moans at the back end of a GT, but the most irritating one is probably that caused by failure of the two spring-loaded bump-stops in the tailgate. Try pushing them in and twisting them around - they should lock shut then. Drive over some bumpy stuff and see if the noise has stopped. If it has, then replacement parts are cheap - about a tenner iirc. Removing them altogether isn't a good idea for reasons already stated above, and their function is to pop the hatch up enough when the release is pushed so that you can get your fingers underneath to lift the thing up.

Other less obvious sources of rattles are the ski-hatch not being shut properly, things not secured in the two lockers above the wheel arches, and even the spare tyre toolset rattling around under the carpet. You could try folding down the seats and carefully replacing them too - the plastic lugs on top of them should pop up to reveal a red bit.

A 2006 GT shouldn't have a problem with faded rubber seals squeaking. Sounds more like you've got something moving around that shouldn't be.

Update - I've spoken recently with a V6 Gt owner who had five attempts at finding the source of his irritating squeak. Turned out it was the hard rubber seal on the edge of the glass of the rear hatch rubbing against the bodywork at the side. If you've got a squeak, then it might be worth putting a bit of silicon polish or something else slippery on these.

It goes without saying that this should never have been a problem with the car from the outset, but we love Alfas for their little foibles...

All,

I have an '04 JTD and had the same rattle from the tailgate.

Took it to Mangoletsi and they initially used the dry lube to try and cure it, but this didn't work. Its just been back in and the rear screen has been resealed. Whilst it has not completely eradicated the sqeak, it is 99.9% better.

I very carefully re-tighten all the cross-headed screws holding the plastic trims onto the rear door every couple of weeks. This seems to stop the squeaks. Do not overdo it though or you will strip the plastic inserts in the door that they screw in to. I think some small plain washers and spring washers under the screw heads would keep them suitably tight but I cannot find any small enough. Used to use them all the time when I was an aeromodeller in my youth!

David, try the RS website ( http://rswww.com/cgi-bin/bv/rswww/home.do?cacheID=ukie&returningUser=N ) they have every kind of nut bolt and washer, I got replacement stainless steel cap head screws for the gear stick surround from them after the originals went rusty…delivery is expensive though if you are just ordering a packet of washers.

I have tried every suggestion to do with the rear hatch rattle/squeak, I've tried:

adjusting the boot latched
applying aluminium tape to 'thicken' the bar that the latch grabs, to take up any movement
removing the spring loaded bump stops
putting tape on the boot lid where it closes onto the rubber seal
applying silicone to the boot rubber
played around with the rubber flex that carries the cables into the boot hatch from the roof
The dealer has also fitted new hinges

All the above have fail to fix the squeak but I'm not giving up!

My next attempts will be to check the outer rubber seal around the glass and then remove all possible trim (including the trim on the inside of the boot hatch) and see if the rattle has gone, then re-instate piece by piece to see if the squeak occurs again, something that the dealer should be doing, but I’ve given up on them.

MANY THANKS TO ALL ,RE;Rattle, I shall have to wait for a successful remedie, prior to my attempt to cure it.
My wife is forever complaining,Sad thing is She has a point?
After all I talked her out of a merc; S.L.K. Gives you an idea of my situation, and earache though got to admit love the car.

My rattle root cause was pretty obvious. The passenger-side clip that the parcel shelf slots into is broken. Need to replace that but will have to be creative with explanations when ordering. Also there is a rubber sleeve that goes onto the parcel shelf spindle (can't think of another word to describe it) that is also missing, which obviously provides some rattle prevention function.
