Evening all,

I have a very poorly GT Blackilne diesel atm. Last thursday during my daily commute from work, I drove over a speed bump around 10-15mph when the gear jumped out into neutral and then a horrible knocking / tapping noise started coming from the top of the engine. The car has since had one injector replaced but hasn't fixed the problem. Tomorrow the plan is to remove the engine by a specialist Afla garage in Cambridgeshire and investigate the problem further.

The car has done 90,000 miles and yes, the engine had oil. However, the morning of the incident i noticed that the oil level was 2 bars on the digital display. I then topped the oil up with 1ltr of Shell HELIX HX5 15W-40 Diesel & Gasoline oil.

The car is in the best place possible but I would like to know if anyone has experienced the same issue or has any ideas as to what has happened?

Thanks - Jack B

hit a speedbump, damaged something ...now guess what is broken??? ...surely the garage are in a better position to make that call.

At this point, surely all you can check is that you've selected a garage with a decent reputation

5w40 is the oil grade, not 15w40. Just a typo maybe?

If you've got a knocking noise at the top, the only real way to find out is to start stripping it down and looking for damage somewhere unfortunately.
My initial guess is that the bump may have made it skip a tooth on the timing if the belt wasn't quite tight enough.

Are you convinced that the noise is internal to the engine? It seems scarcely credible that a speed bump at that speed would cause internal damage. Given that the car jumped out of gear it seems more likely that an engine mount came loose and is knocking.
