The idea came last year while on holiday in the Scilly Isles. On the small island of St Agnes, my wife & I were in the Turk’s Head, the UK’s most South-Westerly pub. I wondered where, on the British mainland, the eight compass point pubs might be.

Back home and researching further, I found pubs at the eight compass points around Britain (North, North-East, East, South-East, South, South-West, West and North-West) plus a pub at the geographical centre. Additionally, there were other pubs at more extreme northerly, easterly and southerly locations so these were also included. I then thought of other ‘extreme’ pubs and included in the itinerary the oldest pub, the smallest pub, the highest pub, the most remote pub and the most crooked pub in Britain. There were also some unique pubs that looked like they would be worth a visit including the only pub in Britain built into a cliff face and pub built to look like a pack of cards! I have talked a mate of mine in to this trip and we are looking at visiting 20 pubs across the land although, if time, may get to visit a couple of other interesting looking ones.

Clearly we do not encourage or partake in drink-driving. The rules of this challenge are to stop and have a drink at the pub but it doesn’t have to be an alcoholic one.

The trip will take in Land’s End and John O’Groats and myself and a long-standing mate will be attempting this epic journey over 8 days from 20th-27th August in my GTV 3.0 V6 (2000).

I have taken a long time planning this route and it should take in some of the best driving roads and most spectacular scenery that Britain has to offer. The route will take in the Bealach Na Ba, an awesome alpine-like mountain pass in the Scottish highlands. I have planned each day a morning drive to a lunchtime pub location followed by an afternoon drive to another pub which will have accommodation on site or somewhere within walking/staggering distance! Anticipated driving time each day vary between 7 and 8 ½ hours (assuming no hold ups). Total mileage to do the trip will be in the region of 2,700 miles.

We WILL be doing this trip – we have already paid up for some of the accommodation. If you fancy joining us for an ultimate trip around Britain in your Alfa, PM me. I will let you know where we are staying each night. You will need to book your own accommodation and bring your own Alfa! I think it would be impractical to try and drive in convoy so I would let you know our planned route and where the lunch and evening stops will be. We will start at Dungeness in Kent at midday on Saturday 20th August and should finish at Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk mid afternoon on Saturday 27th August.

We are also going to be raising money for the Alzheimer’s Society (Adrian Chorley is fundraising for Alzheimer's Society) and are planning to do write a blog of the trip (details to follow) so if you can’t make it, you can still follow our progress.
