I have just heard on the news that the government has rejected calls for limits on immigration into this country.
What do you all make of this. I think its a very big mistake, it was a big enough mistake to open our borders in the first place.

In my view there has only been such a massive influx into the country because there are jobs here in the first place.

If the Brits weren't so lazy we would have filled the jobs ourselves and there wouldn't be such rosey employment opportunities for the eastern Europeans.

We've got a few Poles working here and fair play to them, their work ethic is far superior to the locals. We are constantly sloping off early on a Friday afternoon and seeing what we can get away with but the Poles are spot on with their effort, timing, presentation and they correct us on our English!

If only the Brits could put on such a positive image when we go abroad instead of swanning round Magaluf and Ibiza like we own the place p*ssed up with no t-shirt on.

I think it's fantastic that the Uk has such a vibrant and successful economy that we need immigrant skills and labour.

Some of us who came of age in the early '80s remember the misery of a country going down the drain and the need to seek employment abroad (yes, it's a two-way street...). Auf Wiedersein Pet wasn't only a great comedy series, it reflected a miserable reality. Thank God for countries like Germany who welcomed Uk tradesman at that time .

You might not like to accept or even hear this but the Brits were once the "Poles" of europe....

By that definition - the british favourite past time of cunsuming Indian curries would not exist :(

Late night and 24 hr petrol stations

The corner shop open till 11....

Nobody to valet my car

The list is endless.....

But to throw it over the fence....that would mean that Brits would not be allowed to prosper in foreign countries as well....:(

You can't have everything....

However uncontrolled and the slap hazard methods this country employs does need to be looked at....

We have rival refugees from war torn countries plonked in the same street and wander why they still hate each other and want to settle old scores...whats that about...

Ah but you live in Wales so t'is only to be expected.

I'm slightly mixed on immigration. I live in an area that has long established immigration communities (Italians who came over to work in the brickworks in the 1st half of the century and Poles who were stationed around the area in the war and chose to make their home here rather than return to Communist Poland). Both these communities have undergone a large degree of assiliation whilst still continuing their own cultural heritage and add a lot to the local community.

However, we also have a massive influx of new wave East Europeans who have moved to the area. This has placed significant pressure on social services (hospitals, schools etc.) none of which was propoperly accounted for by Central Government leading to local Government funding shortfalls. In addition with so many children in schools learning English as a second language this is bound to have an impact on the amount of time spent with the other pupils.

I suspect in time these to will be incorporated but at the moment it does feel overwhelming where half the people you walk past in the supermarket aren't speaking English.

Don't get me wrong I am not saying we should have no immigration, we should however put some contols and limits in place. At the moment we have more people coming in than we do leaving, and that puts a big strain on public services and infrastructure, and the rest of the population suffer as a result.

Now we can imagine what it's like when hoards of British engineers turn up in Dubai and Qatar, settle down into their little closed communities, live by their rules regarding drinking, set up their churches, talk English to each other in the supermarkets, refuse to learn Arabic, demand bi-lingual education and healthcare ....

It's a shame the public services are being overstretched but the country has brought it on itself by bending over backwards to be overly politically correct and translating everything into a zillion languages in the first place. It's snowballed out of control and they have had to reign the spending back in on services like translation.

It winds me up going to the capital of England and struggling to find people that speak English, having to say everything twice because no-one on a reception desk from eastern Europe can understand my thick westcountry farmer accent. But I can't get angry with them, they're only behind the desk because the job was vacant in the first place. If we went down the dole queue and handed out:
You: Fruit picking this week
You: Supermarket shelf stacking
You: Factory work
You: Labouring
There's your jobs, take it or leave it. Your choice, earn money or not, you refuse the job, no job seekers allowance. If that happened there would be half the unemployment, quarter of the vacant jobs and nowhere near as many immigrants stretching the country's resources to deal with non English speakers.

Phew, rant rant rant!

The Scotish controled Labour Government of Britain wants to destroy the English with uncontrolled Imigration. Most imigrants are going to England and it will therefore be changed dramatically both economically and culturally.......

Most of the Poles and other East Europeans coming in are pretty decent and hard working*. What we need to do is allow them to come in exchange for the the rancid, lazy, mouth breathing, good for nothing English underclass which seems to be self multiplying exponentially on a daily basis.

*They've got some dodgy motors though. ;)

Where did that bile come from, Stori?

Firstly, all parts of the United Kingdom benefit from new immigrants, even those that come from Australia - they are all welcomed regardless of race creed or colour, to all parts of the UK:

Secondly, the UK government is democratically elected by the UK population - not imposed by the Scots on the English. BTW England has a population of some 45 million, Scotland just under 5million they vote for a Labour Government and that's what they got.

I spent a fantastic year in Austraila one of my favorite countries and awesome people and i work with some well funny Australians in the office.........but Austrailia has a completely different view of immigration to UK. They once had a party called the 'one nation' who had a slogan

"two wongs don't make a white"

Thankfully its changing and the Austrailians i'm friends with in the UK are embarressed about the 'stay out' approach in Austrailia and very embarrassed about the treatment of the Aboridginal people :tut: ..........

At least they finally got rid of ruddy John Howard anyway.

Also i worked Bannana picking in OZ and on the vineyards also as i travelled their beautiful country, which is what these so called 'immigrants' are doing working the land and fruit picking....good luck to them i say.....the lazy bums from the UK won't do it and i think you'll find home grown problems (English people) are a bigger burden on our ecconomy than a few vistitors.

Ithink its because the Brown goverment follow these guidelines :)

FEUDALISM: You have two cows. Your lord takes some of the milk.

PURE SOCIALISM: You have two cows. The government takes them and puts them in a barn with everyone else's cows. You have to take care of all of the cows. The government gives you as much milk as you need.

BUREAUCRATIC SOCIALISM: You have two cows. The government takes them and put them in a barn with everyone else's cows. They are cared for by ex-chicken farmers. You have to take care of the chickens the government took from the chicken farmers. The government gives you as much milk and eggs as the regulations say you need.

FASCISM: You have two cows. The government takes both, hires you to take care of them and sells you the milk.

PURE COMMUNISM: You have two cows. Your neighbors help you take care of them, and you all share the milk.

RUSSIAN COMMUNISM: You have two cows. You have to take care of them, but the government takes all the milk.

CAMBODIAN COMMUNISM: You have two cows. The government takes both of them and shoots you.

DICTATORSHIP: You have two cows. The government takes both and drafts you.

PURE DEMOCRACY: You have two cows. Your neighbors decide who gets the milk.

REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY: You have two cows. Your neighbors pick someone to tell you who gets the milk.

BUREAUCRACY: You have two cows. At first the government regulates what you can feed them and when you can milk them. Then it pays you not to milk them. Then it takes both, shoots one, milks the other and pours the milk down the drain. Then it requires you to fill out forms accounting for the missing cows.

PURE ANARCHY: You have two cows. Either you sell the milk at a fair price or your neighbors try to take the cows and kill you.

LIBERTARIAN/ANARCHO-CAPITALISM: You have two cows. You sell one and buy a bull.

SURREALISM: You have two giraffes. The government requires you to take harmonica lessons.
