Hi everyone,

I've just joined this forum, as I'm thinking of trading my slightly dull (if reliable) Audi A3 for a GTV. I'm a 32yr old Product Designer living in Hampshire, with a passion for all things Italian - not least my beloved Ducati!

I'm hoping some of you might be able to point me in the right direction, as far as advice on buying, problem areas, and things to check.

I've done a bit of digging and it seems the rear subframe bushes need checking out, but other than that, perhaps you might all be able to help!

I've been looking specifically at 2.0 TS models, around 97-98 period (in other words, worth about the same as my Audi).

I've been struggling to find lowish mileage models in dealers - most seem to be 80k or over. I had a look at a fairly reasonable one today with 86k - pretty tidy, but it concerns me that in 18 months time I'll have a car with over 100k on the clock - what are they like at higher mileages?

cheers,

Nik

Hi and hello if looked after they are normally quite good even at high mileage the back bushes should have now been repalced with the newer type (ie GTV v6 type of design.) The firts thing is make sure of a good history and change belt,s & tensioners A.S.A.P even if they say that they have been done just recently apart from that they are a great car to own and run. Family stops me from owning one so have to make do with 4 ALFAS in the family. Good luck in finding a good one?

Greetings and welcome to AO.

A GTV sounds like a great choice. Some good advice there from 'Howmuch'. If you search the GTV section of the forum there will be plenty of background info on things for you to consider when looking to buy the car.

A fantastic looking car - hope you enjoy it when you get it. There were loads in Autotrader earlier in the year when I was looking and I was restricting my mileage to less than 60K in my searches.

Hi everyone, and thanks for the welcome! Slightly slow reply, what with work keeping me busy, and the welcome good weather getting out on my bike!

Spiderman's guide is a good help - I feel much better armed now.

Quick question - I have a mate who's in to Lancias - is the 2.0TS engine the same as those used in the Thema etc, except with a twin spark head? He mentioned about the balancer shaft used on those, which I seem to recall is driven off the cambelt - is this the same?

cheers,

Nik

I've got a 900SS injection, and my wife's got a 600 Monster, so I'm well used to looking after cambelts! ;-)

Thanks Fabrice. Like you, I'm constantly amazed and appreciative of the amount of helpful individuals out there on internet forums. A great resource.

My search has been hampered by being away on a work trip, although I did have a look at quite a nice GTV yesterday. It's a red one, and I've gone off the idea a red one now, so I'll keep looking.

cheers,

Nik

Agreed, that's my favourite combo too.

I've had a spanner in the works since - the Audi I need to sell to buy an Alfa has a broken front spring, so I've got to fix that first. Bit of a pain, as I don't want to spend money on a car I'm getting rid of, but there we go.

Incidentally, I was in Johannesburg last week and saw three GTVs and quite a few other Alfas. That despite cars being expensive in SA - good to see there are plenty of enthusiasts out there though.

cheers,

Nik
