I don't really believe that rod bearing damage is caused by cylinder shut down.
That would mean that engine braking, high revs with part throttle and even the exhaust stroke are causes too.

(Heavy) pulling in high gears is bad for rod bearings for sure. And nowadays gearbox controlers make engines run @ quite low revs.. 😉

You are right, what the gearbox does in N mode in the MY21 is just disgusting. It barely lets the rev above 2k. I can also feel physical pain when I see how it works. I only use N with manual shifting and I keep the revs higher. N has become the victim of E6D. The only aspect taken into account for N was to reduce CO2 emission and to optimize it for the WLTP without regard for the health of the engine and the power transmission. I really recommend to everyone not to use N with automatic shifts.

I also feel and hear vibrations from the engine (like it is struggling or something) on my MY2018 Quad, when accelerating from below 2k rpm. Even more noticable in A mode, where gearbox really lets the engine to drive below 1500 rpm. Anyone has those? Most people might not even feel or hear them, but I do, and its it annoying me more and more... I might have a chance to drive someone else's Quad in a week or so and hopefully find some answers.

And at higher speeds (above 62mph/100kmh) I feel and hear sort of pulsating vibrations from the rear of the car, most pronounced at 112mph/180kmh. It is speed dependent, not rpm! So I'm afraid it is the diff (or driveshafts?). I bought the car second hand though, but still have a year of warranty left. BTW, I already changed the tyres and did the alignment.

Well, I have no Giulia. But I drive some times a VW Caddy for my job which has a sort of "gear advisor" in the dash, it tells me which gear I should select (I guess with polution in mind).
When I follow that advice (manual gear box) the engine revs so low that it vibrates more and also makes a drone sort of noise: irritating! So I drive mostly one gear lower than that "handy" gear advisor tries to tell me.

That sounds like cylinder disactivation. Makes the car sound like it’s in the wrong gear.
once you hear it you notice it all the time.
I know it’s not just low revs or gear that’s too high because when the car is not warmed up and 3cyl is not possible I do not get this and it’s smooth and creamy at low revs too.

We are waiting for Stephan and alfaworkshop to sort out distribution arrangement and I am first in the queue.
I had spoken to Stephan about this last year but with Jamie Porter offering this within driving reach and with just 1 year left on the warranty, I might get it done too so keep me in the loop as well. Not really interested in more power, just turning off cylinder deactivation and removing torque limiters.

All sounds normal. What you are hearing at startup is the high pressure fuel pump if it is more from the driver's side.
Thanks metalgod, sorry meant to reply sooner. The noise is a tap, in time with the engine tick over. The car drives fine, the engine pulls fine. My old Nissan used to tap on start up, and there was a rattle upon the first touch of the accelerator, which was oil not reaching the rockers straight away. This sounds like that, it's quite loud, but is consistent. I would hope that it is normal, and the diagrams explain that.

Unfortunately getting the bonnet opened and closed is not easy as the catch sticks, you have to prize it open, and close it and wait for it to pop open and close it again. I plan to get that issue seen to on it's first service. 🤣

The tapping now seems to continue with driving, I've had the window's open and I'm sure I can stil hear it, it's as if there's no oil, but there is. Furthermore, lately it is now reverberating through the exhaust, so from behind the car it's luke a loud knock.

@Mazza200sx , you should not be hearing any tapping when driving, at least it should not be THAT loud, and most certainly not reverberating via the exhaust. It may a noisy hydraulic lifter perhaps which I have heard of on some very early cars. Worth getting it checked.

Thanks again @metalgod23, I am not the most mechanical minded, but I know the basics, I stripped engine's out on my early cars and rebuilt them. The sound definitely does not seem normal. I associate it with lack of oil, but there's so many more components bolted on to engines now, it could be anything. The knocking did raise my concerns, I've informed the dealer as well.

The high pressure fuel pump is the 'can' like thing with small bore metal pipes to the side of the engine at at the top on driver's side. This usually makes a sharp higher pitch ticking noise and is normal. The injectors also tick when idling. It should not sound like a low pitch 'knock'. Worth getting it looked at to ensure it is not the valve lifters or something else.

Hmmm it's a whole world of new, my first YouTube upload. 🤣 Tapping.

I started with the exhaust, as in my rush the weekend before last, I noticed the knocking but couldn't do anything with it. It was another busy weekend, but just managed to record this small clip, moving on from the back to within the engine bay. It's loudest on the left. This time you can't really hear any knocking, it was a definite loud bang in time with tick over last week.

I've checked the oil manually, crystal clear and halfway up the dipstick with the engine running. Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

I've mentioned it several times to the dealer and once I can get petrol will book it in with them to check out.

Difficult to hear (when Im supposed to be working!)....but it does sound a bit like a lose (not fully pressurised) lifter to me.......but If it was on idle it sounds a bit quick as the tap would only be half engine speed. How far away it it from its last or even next oil change?....some engines are more sensitive to old oil than others......not to mention the correct grade of course.

Thanks for listening, I played the clip at work yesterday, to a colleague, another in surprise asked if it was my engine, thinking it was a lawnmower. With all a/c, stereo, etc sound's off, you can hear it whilst driving, and it's clearly getting worse. The dealer said that some Giulia's are noisy.
