Giulia 2.2jtdm poor fuel consumption.

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced poor fuel consumption for an excessive period of time as it’s now only achieving 42mpg driving normally?!! Driving like my life depends on it gets me 46-47mpg.. Driving in that style would get me 54mpg in my remapped giulietta 1.4 sportiva! ( I drive on a motorway very early in the morning with no traffic, and my Journey home has very little traffic) so my question is, is this normal?!

I average 43mpg from new in just over 18 months. That’s all kinds of driving, town, motorway, country lanes, etc. So I’d say you’re there or there abouts...
The claimed figures are simply unobtainable. Even driving at 58mph, the slowest I can drive in 8th over an extended period, only gave me just over 60mpg. A steady 40 returns about 70mpg but who’s going to buy an Alfa and drive at 40mph everywhere?
Then throw in the DPF regen when consumption drops to under 30mpg for over 15 mins every few hundred miles...

I’d be pleased to get 42 out of a Giulia 2.2. I’m not sure anybody would tell you to expect 48 mpg from one. But then I got 37.5 out of my Giulietta MA also on 18 wheels.

Thanks for the reply’s guys. It’s just a tad disappointing that the latest and most expensive diesel alfa I’ve bought is by far the most terrible on fuel compared to the Gt and 159 I’ve had previously.. Knew I should have had the petrol!

Yep, I was disappointed too. Had it chipped to 220bhp and now ave 46-48 (more torque, more cruising, more fun), but a lot of motorway - otherwise around 44

I have had courtesy diesel Giulias before and driving normally which is partly spirited in my case and partly cruising at ~60 mph only averaged about 38 to 42mpg. In comparison my petrol 2.0 averages ~33 mpg on the same roads. So you are on the right ball park. Petrol consumption can drop significantly below 30s if you are driving hard or in town most of the time whereas the diesel does not drop that much.

2.2 Diesel chipped to 220bhp:
Just pulled in for Starbucks - done 77miles, mix of motorway & town: 46.7mpg - sounds about right
I'd easily get 50mpg on a longer run

Out of interest could you tell who did your remap please? I’ve had both my 159 and giulietta done in the past with good results..

£30 (approx 24 ltr) returns 180 miles (3 round trips to work) think that equates to a shade over 33mpg ... I can live with that

It's on here: What have you done to your Giulia today?
Ignore the 54mpg - happened to go on a long run shortly afterward - but I rarely get that unless I'm on the motorway for sometime

I must be really lucky then. I'm getting nigh on 48mpg at the moment. It's lost about 3mpg since fitting 18" wheels with the P7 run flats. The other thing to bear in mind is that its dark and wet, so lights and wipers are on and they impact on your mpg. I think someone earlier said that using 'all efficiency' instead of N or D will give you another couple of mpg too but to all intents and purposes its what you do with your right foot that will make a difference. My figures are based on 80 miles per day, mostly 24 miles A Road, 16 miles motorway all at peak times.

Backmapit and see what happens. Doesn't that help? Maybe cuddle it abit and give her some new filters and what additives do she need. Ya picking out some power that she wasn't made to give. Maybe you need some components that was not included to that type of craft ya payed for? (fuelpump,injectionarray and so on)

We did a 2000 mile trip to France last week cruising at 130 kmh all day long in our Giulia with the odd blast to 200kmh and we averaged 43 mpg, though acceleration in A is surprisingly slow unless you push the pedal to the floor. My Giulietta 2.0jtdm never gets above 35mpg but that's on very short journeys to and back from work. If I can get another 40 bhp with better mpg I'm very interested?

Due to probable OCD and a need to track fuel costs in the days when I had an expensed company car, I track my mpg quite rigorously. I usually fill to the brim, and record the current mileage each time I need fuel, and rely on these numbers rather than the car's average mpg which always seems optimistic.

So over the lifeime of my ~28,300 miles Speciale, which will be 3 years old in 3 weeks, my average mpg is 44.03 mpg; which BTW has cost ~£3,700.

And the mpg has been pretty constant over those 3 years too - maybe slightly worse in the winter months.

Cheapest fill-up : Costco in June 2017 @108.9 p/litre
Most expensive : Shell in September 2018 @ 136.9p/litre

I need to get out more ...

Just thought I would continue this thread than start a new one. I have a 2017 Giulia 2.2JTDM which has done over 88K miles. No issues with the car apart from being a bit sluggish. I used to average 40mpg consistently which is low as compared to what others are getting. However in the last month or so, fuel consumption has increased considerably and inexplicably to 36MPG. Any ideas on what the reasons could be?

I don't want to offend but have you had the car serviced regularly, air filters etc? I have had 3 diseasel Alfa's and they were so economical I now can't beleive how much petrol I'm going through having thought diesel was going to be the next agent orange! You say the car is sluggish but you should have about 180bhp and 400nm on tap. I had a Giulia with the same engine and age as you and it reallys was a great car to drive as hard as possible everywhere and I never saw less than 35mpg! Short journeys, DPF regens use more fuel, go for a really good long drive and see if the MPG improves?

No offence taken. The car had a full service history when I bought it and I recently did a full service in August at £86K miles with AHM. Just after I bought it in April, I did a trip around France and Spain of about 2500 miles where the average was around the 40mpg mark. Admittedly I havent being doing long journeys for a while now with my longest motorway journey being 16miles on most days. That could be part of the problem. So I guess a long drive is needed to clear things up as you suggest.

It would seem at the time the giulia was shipped with a de-tuned engine producing no more than 150HP and 380NM of Torque. I asked a tuning specialist about a stage 1 remap and this is what he sent me. So thats my next stop after I get the DPF regenerated.

At the moment I'm running the Bluespark box, cost around 250 quid. Its cheap and effective and easy to install and uninstall as you wish. I'm getting something like ~210hp using various measuring apps on my car, and seat of the pants feel is definitely improved. At the moment I'm getting about 44 around town and 54+ on long motorway runs with the box set on 'high' map /with 75% effect. Debating this with the Bluespark guys they said it is not unknown for the max boost settings to be the most economical. They don't seem to do as good a job with the 136hp engine which is a surprise as it should be same hardware, but I would have thought that your car 'post tune' should return similar mpg to mine. And of course it will have more torque than a tuned 2 litre petrol, so its not all bad being on the 'dark' side

Having said all that, if you really want to get a decent non reversible remap then AHM has to be the way to go. More than twice the price but that will take you to 240hp and they will blank your EGR, which may also help your performance issues as well. It isn't cheap but I may well go that route in the new year and sell the Bluespark box to someone else who wants a cheap reversible option for warranty or other reasons.

Advice taken.

Quite happy with the AHM remap. Just done a short trip, and I got a 60mpg average. Never got more than 45mpg before so well happy with that. Car has got some decent performance as well without hardware upgrades. Will now research those and do them when money improves.
