A newspaper reported it as related to a leaky sewer. Now this is what I and my colleagues do (engineering geologists). That was no sewer! My guess is a collapsed cavern, but we're checking the regional geology out of interest.

With something that large, better a sinkhole
than a stinkhole. :)

I seem to remember, several years back, Ant telling us that he has a phobia about sinkholes, so he might not want to contribute too much to this thread! :D

A 330-foot-deep sinkhole killed two teenage siblings when it swallowed about a dozen homes early Friday and forced the evacuation of nearly 1,000 people in a crowded Guatemala City neighborhood.

What causes that to happen then ?
normally some form of underwater 'river' of some desciption that gradually erodes. Intensive building above and poorly planned tunneling 'sub-terrana' add to it.

It's an occasional occurence in Cornwall with properties built upon areas that had previously been excavated far below as tin mines.
