I've got a bit of spare time coming my way and could think of no better way to spend it than giving my '51 147 a bit of TLC. I am technically able, but dont have an awful lot of experience.

The car is at 70k and recently passed an M.O.T. without its yearly service. The cam belt was changed recently so I dont think thats an issue.

I would like however, like to change the variator, as I am told that is what makes the car sound like a diesel on startup. Is this realisticly something I can do myself?

I would also like to give it an oil and filter change. I am yet to have a look, but I imagine it is quite straightforward. Can anybody tell me the oil capacity for refilling it, or where I can find this info?

I also intend to have a look at all the discs, pads, and brake lines. Is there anything I should be looking out for aside from the usual wear and tear? Is replacing the brake fluid a task I can do, or best left to a specialist?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Your Variator should have been replaced with the cam belts, as its a cambelt off job to change the variator, well thats what i was told, i had both variator and cambelt changed at the same time, sure someone will come along soon to clarify this.
Oil change is pretty simple, wouldnt recomend using you car jack thou, get it on ramps if possible while your under the car.
Might sound daft but if you look on u tube theres actually videos on how to change brakes and stuff lol.

There's a guide on discs and pads on my website if you are interested. The only special tools are the rear piston wind-in tool and a 7mm hex drive for the fronts.

Replacing the brake fluid is straightforward and similar to most cars. I'd flush the fluid through to replace it as it's overdue for a change probably. You'll see when it's done as the old fluid will be dirty by now. Go for Super Dot 4 or even 5.1 as this lasts longer.

Oil change is easy and the only problem most people run into it the sump plug is often butchered (its a torx or hex fitting). Replace the sump plug washer and it might be worth replacing the sump plug as well.

Ok thanks very much for your help. Anybody know how much oil to put in afterwards? Or do I just go by the dipstick?
