Hi

I need some help.

My 2 year old 159 Ti 1.9 JTmd has developed a power boost problem over the last 6 - 8 weeks.

It only really happens when I am in 6th (or 5th gear) doing say 60 mph and try to accellerate away with my foot hard to the floor. The power comes in ok and is shown on the turbo boost guage going up to 1.4 bar. Then, without moving my foot the boost falls off and drops to about 1.0 bar, with a corresponding lack of power, then it picks up and goes back to 1.4 bar and then drops off again and so on.

Benfield have changed the fuel pump (£65) and replaced the fuel rail ? No real change.

Any suggestions ? I am going back to Benfield in Nerwcastle on Friday for them to have another look but it would be nice to know if mine is the only one with such a problem. Is it the turbo or the computer ? Or something else ? It is spoiling what is a very nice driving experience.

This sounds pretty normal to me. When you put your foot down boost gauge goes to max. As it starts to approach the rev limit (in fact much before that) the turbo boost will drop off to protect the engine. It will never maintain full boost throughout the entire rev range.....

If the turbo is fluttering i.e going up and down quickly, then sounds like you are stalling it. Slap it down to 5th, give it some beans and see what happens.

Brera 2.4 JTD

Hi, I'm having a similar problem...and it's been going on for over 8months now.

My 08 Brera has been back at the dealership many time but they don't seem to be able to diagnose it properly. The problem ranges from small hesitations when accelerating (in any gear) to full on turbo drop off when cruising...and severe hesitation, coughing and spluttering etc.

When the car is fine and the problem is not evident, the turbo drops to 1/8th (slowly) when I lift off the accelarator. When the severe hesitation and coughing starts, the turbo dial drops like a stone when I left off the accelerator.

Is there any chance that this problem is linked to the exhaust filter system? After one of the severe episodes I got out of the car and smelt the burning aroma that I've been told is the exhaust system going thru one of it's cycle. So could it be that the turbo is surpressed when the exhaust system is going thru a cycle?

I'm starting to pull my hair out with this. The dealership don't seem to care and I'm on the brink of going to Alfa UK. Alfa create and sell their cars based on passion. I buy into all of that and love my Brera (and my old 147) but this problem is undoing all of that....fast.

thanks
B

Its crazy how some faults exhibit themselves in a car. I just recently had major problems with my 1.9JTDm. My problem was (it turned out) was overboosting of the turbo, this caused juddering, all of which looked like clutch/DMF problems, it wasnt though, it was the ECU. New ECU, all cured.
