A smell of fresh diesel surrounded the car not long after being still in traffic.

Once stopped it seems to cease, fortunately as I have a full tank of fuel!

After lunch I had a look around the low pressure end, filter and pipes around the back of the engine, they seem clean and dry. The bottom of the exhaust was wet and diesel was dripping off the bottom of the sump too. Only when the engine is running.

Is this likely to be the high pressure rail? the engine was running fine, I have yet to het it on some ramps and/or tak the engine cover off

Pulled off the undertray, cleaned off the sump cover. Looked at as many pipes as I can find and they seem dry, with exception to a slight dirty oily metal feed pipe from high pressure pump to fuel rail.

Started the engine and waited. Nothing for minutes then slowly it started to come round but I can't tell from where.

Under the pump looks to have diesel on it but there is so much (pipework) there I can't look properly around it. This is my only hunch so far and I'm not happy: I'm hopeing it is not connected with the high pressure pump!!

It says on it: BOSCH - Made in Italy <-- Isn't that a contradiction in terms??

I have scared my car into submission. Well the leak has stopped and I haven't replaced anything. I suspect one of the fed pipes to the high pressure pump but for now I can't prove it.

It's a mystery.

The high pressure pump is a piston pump. They have 3 pistons. If you look at your pump you can see 2 blocks held on with 4 screw. There is another underneath that you can't see. I suspect that is leaking. If it is the pump needs to come out. Mine only leaked on start up though.

I hope I'm wong.
