For the last couple of weeks my fuel consumption has gone through the roof, for 165 miles per £25 to 130 mile per £25. I have also noticed today, that the fan starts when the engine is cold, then stops, then starts again. Any clues will be gratefully received.

Water temp sensor or thermostat are usually to blame in these situations. Sounds like the fan is kicking in o its own or after being told the engine is hot, so its taking longer to warm up using more fuel.

If the V6 works like the 16v, then I'd go for the temp sesnor if the fan is starting up when it shouldn't. Mine did this after I'd heated the whole thermostat assembly to harden araldite used to stick the plastic pipe back in. Cos the temp sensor was hot the fan started.

To go COMPLETELY off topic, my 8v TS is giving me about 31mpg urban. Is this normal?

Cheers

Sounds about right, used to get 28/29 for mainly shortish runs from my 1.8 16v.
