Ford’s vision for the electric future is still hazy, but it clears a little more every day. The latest updates suggest that a Mustang Mach-E will be the name of Ford’s electrified Mustang.

AllFordMustangs.com has uncovered a pair of trademark applications with the European Intellectual Property Office for a fancy new Mustang badge (below) and the name “Mustang Mach-E.”

Ford had previously applied with the EUIPO and the U.S. patent office for a trademark on the name Mach-E, but has now added Mustang to the name, suggesting that it won’t be applied to the electric crossover the brand has been teasing.

Meanwhile, reports have been flying around about the future of the Mustang more generally. Automobile reports that the Mustang will stay on the same platform until 2026 (with an update somewhere around 2022), while other sources report that Ford has killed the hybrid Mustang in favor of an all-electric model continue reading...

So it finally gets launched - and I am encouraged by this because as lovely as I think the Tesla Model S is, I find it way overpriced and, if I'm honest, I have doubts over Tesla's commitment to longevity in cars once Elon decides he really loves space more.

A very mainstream, value based provider like Ford seems a better bet.

Just been on the pre-order configurator on the Ford website, and step 1 is to choose the base model to configure. I select the 99KW one with the longer range battery (seems sensible) and the basic price for this immediately comes up. Unconfigured, no extras yet, not even paint choice. Know what that base price is?.....

£57,000

No. I'm not joking. it's 57 freaking grand for the base pre-options.

What the actual chuff is going on with the messaging on electric cars? Are we supposed to be moving away from ICE to Electric or what? How on earth is this going to happen if mainstream value manufacturers like Ford believe that people are going to be paying out 60k + for these things?

It's crazy. Either incentivize us to buy E cars or just admit that you aren't too bothered if we keep buying diesels.

Madness.

(and I know you can get a Leaf or a basic learner driver model electric car for 20k but that's not the segment of the market that buys most cars. If people are going to get tempted away from the 30k german ICE-mobiles that are 75% of the cars on the road they need to be offered something that is equallly spacious, equal quality and has equal kerb appeal and currently you're offered either a shopping trolley or a something at RS6 prices)

I realise this should be in the rant room too. So you can poke that up yer hole as well.

This is like Inception level rantage. Ranting about having ranted outside the rant room outside the rant room.

Or is it even ranting about the possibility of being ranted at for ranting outside the rant room about ranting outside the rant room about having ranted outside the rant room?

Phew.

But, for a basic "going shopping" car, 20k is too much when a basic ICE can be bought for not much more than half that. Then there is the depreciation. Until electric prices across the board match the costs of buying and running a petrol/diesel model then the majority of the public will steer clear. The only buyers are surely those with an above average eco conscience and pockets to match.

This is the most depressing motoring story I've seen since Ford started sticking Mexico badges on poverty spec MKV Escorts and claiming them so be somehow related to Hannu's rally car.

Mach 1 is very fast. It sounds fast and we know that fast planes are really noisy. If you put Mach 1 on the side of a car, the car has to be very fast. Like, say, a Mach 1 Mustang. It's loud and brash, it has a big V8, your mum would probably be horrified if you parked it on the drive.

Mach-e is nothing. If you Google Mach-e, Google changes it to Mach 3 and shows you pictures of razors. If you try again, you get some crappy SUV.
