Has anyone changed power steering fluid from red type to green (correct spec Tutela GI/R) and had their rack fail soon after, especially cars with higher mileage? I'm contemplating changing my fluid to GI/R. Car has 114000 miles on it and the steering can feel ever so slightly juddery when parking, though i have none if the frothing fluid symptoms. Reservoir is the updated version. What concerns me is that if i change the fluid to the thinner green stuff i might end up with a pile of leaks that the thicker red fluid didn't escape through. Anyone changed the fluid on higher mileage cars and had problems? Cheers.

I changed mine a couple of weeks ago because I had the red frothy tank problem, took twenty minutes and not had any further problems at 90,000 miles. In fact it just passed the MOT without any advisories, and to say I'm chuffed is an understatement as I had the water pump go and spent at least a few grand getting it all right, I was worried about the rack and emissions but all clear :)

Thanks for your response. If a few more say that they've changed to GI/R on higher mileage cars with no rack issues i may bite the bullet and change the fluid. Cheers

My 159 had 105k on it when I bought it and an inspection by a specialist found red fluid. His recommendation was to leave things as they are in the absence of any issues. There is a risk of popping the seals if you change the fluid, so if there’s nothing wrong, why risk causing other problems ? The subsequent two years I have owned the car have shown no further problems. The steering is a little heavy, no more. On a high mileage car with no history of steering rack issues, the status quo is the best way forward.

I changed mine at 95k and the power steering rack failed within 2k. No idea if the two were connected though. I hadn't had any problems with the red fluid prior to changing. T

I changed the fluid and reservoir on mine at about 140k miles by following the consensus on here. My steering rack went altogether at about 165k miles. Pitted corrosion on the rams.
Could not source a second hand rack to recondition in Ireland, so had to bite the bullet and buy a new one from stealers. North of 1k euro:cry:

Hold fire on the change .............
Changed mine 20,000 miles ago now at 115k , new rack needed but probably already on its way out. I'm not convinced the fluid change affected it. Probably my aggressive driving and the fact that these are known to fail anyway.
