Fixing the subwoofer rattle (or the superglue trick) ??

2340 Views 23 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Pud237
Help me forum users, you are my only hope!

My Bose subwoofer is making the well known rattle.
I tried to take the whole lot off today, but could not take the subwoofer frame or the parcel shelf off, so could not get to the rattle

Does anyone have a solution for this ?

Ah here have a cookie.
Humor is fine, but not that early in the morning. Especially not after a bank holiday. :)

Hit it hard?

How is it secured?

Can you remove the parcel shelf to get at it?

I'd go for hit it really hard.

As bad as my suggestion of 'leave it alone, ignore it' was, Andys 'Clarkson style hit it with a hammer' clearly trumps it :p I think the OP has left, never to return again after our helpful suggestions
No, hitting it hard will not solve the problem Argh!!!
This thread is going nowhere fast :)

The saloon subwoofer is placed between the parcel shelf liner (the top thing) and the metal frame that holds the lower part of the parcel shelf (the one with the light)
I cant separate the two.
That is not to say that a mechanic could not, but I cant.
G
So, the metal frame is welded to the car. The top cover will be installed in the factory before the glass. Remove the rear seat backrest inc head rests, then remove the two side trims that run up the sides of the rear screen. If there are no obvious fixings, it must be a press fit line most trim.

If hitting it from below through the holes in the metal tray after unclipping the trim and hitting it upwards hard doesn't work or isn't your style, try whacking a lever into the edges, maybe with a hammer and levering.

If none if these suggestions are suitable, please feel free to jog on and find out for yourself.

I would have gotten more useful replies if I had asked this question in a knitting forum.

You're trying my patience now.

What exactly did you find after removing the rear seat back and trim panels?

Let me guess, you haven't bothered?

The top trim is the only bit that is removable.

Go remove it.

Go on,

Off you go,

Done it yet?

Turn it off and roll down the window... Oh wait I think someone said that already. Did it work?

Are you trying to be funny, or trying to be obnoxious ?

The top parcel shelf cant be removed like that.
removing the rear seats, headrest etc, and you still cant remove it, as something is still preventing it from being removed.
First is the brake light assembly, and secondly something below where the sub woofer is.
And not the side trimming.
Just listen to radio 2 if you have to, that shouldn't trouble the subwoofer and you can listen along to some nice stories.. ? Work with us here

Seeing as we have no other better suggestions.. maybe try the search function. If it's such a common issue it must have been discussed before?
I think i remember reading another thread about the sub rattle, might have been a rear speaker though, but there was a thread about it. ( Id look but Search doesn't work on my phone)
I took the material covers off the plastic speaker covers. Helped no end but still vibrates a little. Try that.
I have not tried to remove the material completely, I have tried to hold my hand on it, and the rattle is more subdued, but still there. :(

I'm not trying to be obnoxious, as I don't think I have been either offensive or repulsive. Sarcastic yes, obnoxious no!

However, it would help if you had said what you have tried so far. It'd save time.

The top section does come off.

Here's how.

First, remove the rear seat, but this is easy! Two Allen-key bolts hold tabs to the chassis; look under the front-bottom edge of the seat cushion. Remove those, and the cushion just lifts off.

Two more bolts secure tabs at the bottom of the seat upright. Undo these, and the upright pulls upwards and off; there are retaining tabs at the back of the seat that simply pull out from the metal upright behind the seat.

Once out, you'll find some round plastic clips holding the parcel shelf down. Remove these, then manoevre the parcel shelf out.

The seatbelts will be in the way a little, but no big deal.

OR

remove entire back seat, 6mm allen headed x 4

remove C pillar trim, X headed screws x2 then pull away from pillars

remove 4 'pop-in' plastic rivets

should lift up & outwards.... oh yeah remove 3rd brakelight connector

OR EVEN

Hi, I had this problem with my parcel shelf, if you drop the cover under parcel shelf in the boot check the stud fasteners that attach it to the beam the sub and amp sit on. Mine was a nut that had dropped off in the centre position (found it sitting on the top of the cover). It seems the sub can undo the fasteners!

(Borrowed from elsewhere in the site. Search is good)

Oh, can I have a cookie now too?
I assume a thank you would be out of the question.
