I searched for whirring gearbox noises, but this seems a bit different:

I can almost feel it more than hear it, it's so faint. When I shift up to third, say 20 mph, I can hear a very faint high speed, high pitched whirring/rattling noise. If I move the shift lever a fraction in the gate, the noise stops. I can feel it through the base of the shifter.

You wouldn't notice it with the radio on. The gearbox has never been exactly smooth. You have to let the synchro take the gear, you can't force it.

I had the gearbox oil changed 2,500 miles ago.

Anything to worry about?

Thanks in advance!

Mine's been doing it for years, but in 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th. Noisier in 5th & 6th.
Always thought it was the usual M32 thing, but I've now done tens of thousands of miles like that.
Visit a gearbox specialist if you're concerned.
Mine's had 3 visits a few years ago and they said let the noise get worse. Which it hasn't.

My 2010 159 did it from new. It was still doing it (no better, no worse) at 94,000 miles when it sold.

Very faint, 99% of people would never notice it, but a petrolhead would once used to the car. Dealers always said they couldn't see a problem.

Eh?
I'm certain that has nothing to do with a whirring noise in 3rd gear...

Thanks lussoman and cornclose for providing the correct answer!

spider10: you might get a better response if you make a new post for total passenger door electrical failure. Good luck!
