Alfa was the FIRST manufacturer to use VVT (variable valve timing) on a production car! Othe manufacturers tried but failed! Alfa first used this technology on an Alfetta - shifting the intake cam to give strong low-end torque without compromising output at high revs! Today this technology is commonly used by many including honda and toyota.

ALFACT 6: Alfa Romeo has WON Races in the 10 DECADES that it has existed! (No other manufacturer can claim this.)

Its racing successes began in the 1920s when the Alfa P2 won the FIRST ever WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP!

ALFACT 7: Alfa supplied engines to Amercan INDYCAR RACING from 1989-91.

I quote: 'From the 1920s until the war (1939), Alfa's drivers collected more wreaths than a war memorial!'

An addition to ALFACT 1: The first world F1 championship was won in 1950 by Nino Farina in an Alfa 158, which later became the 159. It had a 447kw per tonne engine. The Bugatti Veyron has a 389kw per tonne engine. Go compare.

ALFACT 8: In 1936, the Alfa 8C 2900B finished FIRST, SECOND and THIRD in the classic Italian Mille Miglia Road Race!
It had a brilliant straight-eight engine (two four-cylinder engines placed end-to-end).
Its top speed? 225 kph in the 1930s!!! At this time, most folk barely travelled over 80 kph!

ALFACT 9: In 1988 Alfa built the 164 Pro Car. It had a rear-mounted 447kw 3-5 litre V10 engine.
Top speed: 338 kph!

Topcar Magazine described this car as follows: 'This stillborn silhouette racer was actually more F1 than sports saloon.'

ALFACT 11: Alfa - a pioneer of DIESEL technology!
They INVENTED Common Rail Diesel. It provided a constant supply of fuel at high pressure to a fuel
rail that was then meted out incredibly precisely to electronically controlled solenoid valves to
each cylinder.

ALFACT 12: Alfa - a pioneer of PETROL techology!
2010 - 100 years of Alfa and it INVENTS the MULTIAIR engine!
Out of 66 NEW engines built by all major motor manufacturers, the MULTIAIR engine took FIRST
PRIZE at the ENGINE OF THE YEAR AWARDS in Germany for best NEW PETROL ENGINE!

(How many Alfa bashers, or for that matter, Alfa lovers, know this???)

My fellow Alfisti, lend me your ears...

I'd like to summarize an article published by Topcar magazine in August 2010, entitled 'WE LOVE ALFA,
HERE'S WHY YOU SHOULD LOVE IT TOO'

Here is a summary of their reasons:

1. BECAUSE you CAN'T LOVE cars and NOT LOVE ALFA! (They then had photos of 17 of the best Alfas made from 1932 to 2005)

2.BECAUSE in 2010 Alfa turned 100 years old ( 'A century of RACE GLORY and GREAT cars')

3. BEACAUSE they made this SUPERCAR (the Alfa Tipo 33)

4. BECAUSE they've had and have geniuses at the helm (They began with Nicola Romeo, Enzo Ferrari, Rudolph Hruska and Sergio Marchionne who took Fiat to record profits of R34bn in 2008.)
5. BECAUSE they make CONCEPTS come true (article on the new Pininfarina Spider Concept - turning concept beauties into road car reality)
6. BECAUSE we grew up lusting after Alfas after watching them in FILMS: (THE GRADUATE - Alfa Spider)
(OCTOPUSSY - Alfa GTV 6) (THE ITALIAN JOB - Alfa Giulia) (DAY OF THE JACKAL - Alfa Giulietta Spider) (BOBBY DEERFIELD - Alfetta)
7. BECAUSE of their love affair with DESIGN HOUSES: BERTONE - 1950S Alfa BAT
PININFARINA - Alfa Spider, GTV; CAROROZZERIA - Alfa Disco Volante; ZAGATO - Alfa SZ;
GIUGIARO - Giulia, Alfetta and Brera
8. BECAUSE they INVENTED the SPORTS SALOON: The 1963 brilliant Alfa Giulia TI
9. BECAUSE CARS weren't the WHOLE story: Alfa built BUSES, JEEPS, DELIVERY TRUCKS and AEROPLANE ENGINES!
10. BECAUSE they've made GREAT ENGINES: the V6; Twin Cam; 8C and 6C; the Multiair engine
11. BECAUSE they INVENTED ALL this TECHNOLOGY: 1) TWIN SPARK engines! 2) Common Rail Diesels
3) Variable Valve Timing 4) Boxer engines 5) Twin engines
10. BECAUSE they created RACING LEGENDS (legendary racing drivers and their cars)
11. BECAUSE they WON RACES in 10 DECADES (of their existence!)

I don't like threads like this!Because while its great to have these feats, I cannot understand how they make sub-par cars since 2000's bar the GTA's(they are just par cars and never really reached the hights of the cult car status they deserved).

To me, and JK eluded to it and I agree, FIAT is the problem and the inhibitor of Alfa's success worldwide! Its almost as if the Italians came up with a 1750 TBi engine with a big turbo and low boost producing 300hp and then Fiat said, no...Alfa cannot be the top marque in this house, up that bosst on a small turbo. Its like the 8C was the best car ever made, then Fiat execs stepped in and said, no, can't be better than Ferrari.

When you are sitting in a performance model of an Alfa, you almost get the feeling that somehow, pre-production a couple of things were changed...somehow the car was better than what you are sitting in

I agree in the case of the brera the concept was RWD and Fiat did intervene but Thats why they're back with the 4C.

I have that magazine and I didn't even buy IT! My friend bought it thinking it would pull me out of ICU after accident and well it did.

The Alfact me not driving an Alfa ever again, scared me shhhtless out of dying :cheese:

FACT: Alfa drivers live in the past...

I never understood why the guys at the clubhouse watch these old black and white race videos... Sure its great we have had these wins many moons ago and where Alfa was the first to do this and that, but its all in the past, alfa needs to move on and sell cars! and get rid of the alfatitus stigma
