I think the costs could outweigh the advantages :(

Maybe our Aoers in Oz can find a few GTA SW's for you to look at

We had a family at my son's school that come to the UK for a few years and when they returned back to Aus decided to take their Astra Estate back. He said at the time that he hired a container, put the car in the container and then filled the car with stuff they were taking back - apparently worked out very cost effective!

What about costs of re-registering it and changing speedo etc  Also comparable prices on similar cars in Australia to UK

I brought mine back to NZ. The car is worth twice as much here, so although it cost me circa £2400 to ship from London and get it on NZ roads, I am still happy it was a good move. Because 156 GTAs were available here new, compliance was no drama. The AA over here were able to look up the VIN (or whatever that plate is) on their system and tell me that it was compliant. They aren't concerned about mph speedos here either, though perhaps that is because it says kmph on there too? As a returning kiwi citizen having lived overseas for at least 21 months, and owned the car for at least 12, I was able to avoid paying any duty. Anyway, the rules may be completely different for Oz. Good luck!

We have 156 GTAs here in Australia but if you wanted to bring your car here I did some research previously and it is possible. It works out that your car will be 2-3 times the value by the time you bring it here so if you sold it Im sure you will make a profit on it.

And as a Pom in Pommieland maybe the Poms in Oz can help ;)

A quote from the above site...
"hi , we just brought our car over it was a ford focus 2004 and it cost us £1000 to ship over on the roll on roll off scheme then customs charged me $3500 to get it through customs then had to get a blue slip (which is just to register it with ozzy standards) which cost $100 and then all your other road worthy stuff pink slip(mot) and green slip(compulsory third party insurance) and then your car insurance, it was alot of hassle and i only expected to pay $2000 at customs (they got you by the balls) but overall it was just about worth it as we knew there was nothing wrong with our car and second hand cars keep their value here so i would do it again"

I am trying to bring mine over here to Australia as I have moved. The Australian Department of infrastructure are a pain in the **** and try to insure that you get so pissed off that you cant be bothered and buy some crappy Australian car(most are Jap or Korean). They will insist that you prove UNINTERUPTED

ownership for 12 months V5 mots service bills and above all that it is your intention to stay in Australia till the day you die! you might also want to prepare yourself for the lack of support from friendly specialists as you might Know more than they do. You certainly won’t want to pay for the parts you need as even used parts a pricey cause car supply is low, due in part to a Stamp duty payable on all car sales new or old. The upside is residuals are high and if you buy a Toyota here as they almost insist you do you won’t lose a thing, apart from your love of driving and breathing. I think that we must bring them here to show what cars can be like. I intend to persevere with the job creation bureaucracy that tries to stop you and I suggest you do to but work hard on your research as it won’t be plain sailing. PM me if you need to.

I am bringing my Barchetta over as well. There has been on for sale in Victoria for $59000 dollars!!! WTF. Apparently the only one in Australia. I have just bought a 1990 3.0 164, I wanted one of these when they still made them cracking. I bought it from an old boy who loves Alfas but was getting on and was looking for something with a smaller engine. Half why home Heater matrix shat itself on the only bit of the road that was in land from the sea and has no service stations in, wait for it 43C! heat. that was 2 weeks ago and I think I have only now manages to wash all the sweat from my body. Life is exciting down under the same way as sharing your bath with a fan heater.

as mentioned, the the 156GTA SW was never sold here in Oz, so it would certainly be unique. as such, you cannot easily put a dollar value onto the vehicle. however, should you ever decide to sell the car here, the saloon versions are currently around A$30~32K for an 'excellent condition' pre-2004 model (we never had the 2004+ versions officially (ie: those models with 330mm front brakes)). some earlier models, not in perfect condition and/or with higher mileage can sell for low-A$20K.

a comparable SW would ideally cost say A$2K more than the saloon version. however, imported vehicles are not popular here. many people are wary, and as such, the resale is generally poor. a non-enthusiast might only want to pay A$20K tops for your motor, even if it's in top condition with low mileage; and they may actually offer you A$15K. i don't know what they're worth in the UK, but that actually may not seem that ridiculous.

anyway, i friend was thinking of importing a 156GTA SW here from the UK. from memory, he said the sale price of the car was around the equivalent of A$20~25K. but he estimated after paying for freight, import duty/taxes, compliance/roadworthy, and registration - basically, to have the car ready to drive - it was going to be an EXTRA A$25K+, bringing the total of the vehicle to over A$50K. to him and me - Alfista - that seems 'reasonable' in the scheme of things. but at the end of the day, resale would be as i've described, meaning a big loss. however, i think an Alfista would actually pay a proper price, if the car were to be sold. he decided against importing one, and settled on a second GTA saloon instead. ;)

insurance is another issue. because there is no such thing as a 156GTA SW in this country, none of the mainstream insurers will help you. so you would need to choose a boutique insurance company, and the cost could be relatively expensive compared with the saloon. though they will likely go by market value - whatever you decide that to be!

good luck with your quest. i hope you do bring one over, because i know a number of people here would lust over it!

:)
