Hi all this is my first time on here but not my first Alfa, I now have a 156 sportswagon JTD but my first love was a GTV both beautiful but then they are both Alfa's so they would be. It feels great to actually drive a car that I want to get into at the end of the day again.

You're not wrong and I especially like the mocking I get at work from people who don't know one end of a spanner from a jam donut, they just don't realise driving not just about getting from A to B. My GTV was faultless as I'm sure my 156 will be as long as I service the arse of it. Thanks for the welcome Haydn.

it always makes me laugh the redicule Alfa's get, they're no worse than anything else, for example i've had my 05 147 JTD 3 months now and all it's needed was a dirty EGR valve sorting out, in contrast to that my brother has purchased an 04 BMW 320 CD he's had it around 2 months and it's needed a £1600 engine rebuild to to a failed swirl flap taking out injectors and damaging a piston, it's needed a new exhaust for which he went to 2 differnt BMW dealers but they couldn't figure our which bracket was missing ( yes i'm serious! ) it was evetually fixed by my ALFA specialist , and it has this week just come back from the garage again! after having a new clutch kit and flywheel fitted costing £961...... so who says German cars are reliable i certainly no longer get any snide comments about mine :cheese:

hi mate I had a BMW 320D Coupe it certainly had its faults in the rain water would get onto the front discs making the friont brakes useless. This gave me the fright of my life several times, also it wasnt any where near as quick as my ALFA GT JTDM

I work with a guy who has a BMW 318 on a 08 plate, his chain tensioner failed and wrecked the engine. Just over 100k miles with a full BMW service history and not a chance of any compensation. He does a big mileage but is always having problems, like replacing a blocked DPF, how can this get blocked when the car spends all of its life at 70+ on the motorway?

i know my 147 JTD 8v easily keeps pace with his BMW, and yet there's a 35bhp difference, the reason being the BMW weighs nearly 500kg more than the 147

In the two years I had my GTV I rescued my house mate three times in her super reliable German Golf and yet my S reg GTV never missed a beat except for the clutch going which finally died as I pulled into my parking space at home (very considerate Alfa's). Clutch replaced by mister clutch for £300.

I tend to agree with the sentiments shown in this tread, all cars have problems, its just that the germans seem to gloss over them very well. On a serious note on know issues, my neighbours 02 3series broke a front spring that speared thru the front tyre, lucky for him he was reversing out of the garage, the day before he was cruising up the motorway at motorway speeds, death would have been a certanty. Now that is an issue.

It does make me laugh that when you tell people you own an Alfa they tutt and say "hope you have breakdown cover" well the excitement you get from driving an Alfa and there looks, even if mine did break down at least it will look good waiting for the AA, my GT is my first Alfa and I am hooked! :inlove:

Not until we've done Spa italia he's not! :tut:

Only ever been left stranded once with my Alfa's. Had a 1.6 147 1st for 2 years and loved it, thats the longest ive had a car so far. Moved onto my GTA and had it just over a year. Diff went soon after getting it and needed a gearbox rebuild & a Q2 but since then it seems to be fine :) i worked out how much it cost me over the year keeping it 'fine' and i don't know where the money's gone but i never want to get rid of this car :D
