my 156 has a very erratic idle speed, sometimes it's ok but other times it's jumping between about 300 and 1800rpm. Had it to local alfa specialist who replaced lamda probe at cost of £140, prob seemed ok for while, then returned. Garage then told me it was air mass meter and would be another £140, luckily they didn't have one in stock cause i found one for £35.00 on e-bay (new). fitted it at weekend and it's made a big difference to top end power but idle prob is back worse than ever. Any suggestions please.

welcome to AO dude...could be a sticky throttle valve...what make of MAF did you fit, there is a lot of crap on fleabay, fitting a cheap one could of solved one related problem to the MAF and not the other...

try spraying the throttle body with carb cleaner, if carb builds up in the butterfly valve in the TB it causes it to stick which gives a wonky idle. if this cures it go shout at your dealer for missing the most obvious things

think MAF was gen bosch part, it was fine for a couple of days. will try cleaning throttle body also, would my ecu need resetting after fitting new MAF?

it shouldnt but it does no harm to reset the ECU after you change anything. just be sure that you have the radio code if your radio needs it before disconencting the battery!

I also had a similar problem and changed the MAF whci settled it down but not fully. My friend spotted a split hose that runs from the back R/H side of the engine and appears to be avacuum hose as a bit of insulating tape around the split settled the problem completely and it idled as smooths as a babies bum. After a while the tape came off and the problem returned so £17.50 odd later at my alfa parts dept and a bit of hose around 6" long (yes I did have to sit down) problem gone again and not returned to date. its worth a look and best sqeeze the pipe as thats when the crack opened on mine and the idle dropped big time.

Hope this helps.
